My fiance and I are going in to get our marriage license this week. I remember reading that I can request multiple copies of the marriage certificate to send one in with the I-485, when do I do this? When we go into the office to get our license if I request multiples will it cost extra right then? I'm just a bit confused on this process.

Thanks! :star:

After we got married we took the license back in and got the certificate. We paid $10 per extra copy. They have to be certified so they should have a stamp similar to a notary. They should be able to do that at the town hall were you did you license. Good Luck and Congrats!!

We got a couple of extras when we took our license in to get it registered (after we got married and the Judge signed it). It varies by state - for the most part, you can get copies from your country clerk's office (or what ever governing body issues them).

Thanks both of you :) So I can't request copies until after we're actually married? Once we receive our marriage cert. in the mail after the wedding can I just send in a photocopy of it with each application that requires one or is this when we go back to the clerk office and get copies of the marriage certificate? How many should we get?

In Texas - I don't believe you can request extras before getting married - you'd have to check your local office.

Now to possibly save you some time (again, this may vary in your state) - you could do what we (and many others) did. Once we got married - instead of having the Judge (or whoever does your ceremony) sending in the now signed marriage license, we took it ourselves to the County Clerk's office and got things done while we waited (that's when we asked for 2 extra certified copies).

Saved us a couple of weeks or so of waiting for the clerk's office to process the license and send it out.

We have only one copy... So far all we have ever needed to use/provide is a regular photocopy.

YMMV

Ya... exactly - I neglected to mention that we never actually used any of the extra copies we got - we sent a photo copy with the intention of bringing the original to the interview (if we had one) but never had an interview. The extra copies are in the fire-safe.

I got an extra copy too. I think I picked up the habit of having two of everything from being a teacher and filing things away and now all this paperwork with USCIS. I would suggest two copies. (I am pretty sure that it has to be certified for the AOS process-- no photocopies.) I have used it at the SSN office the bank and other places as proof of name change. We also took our license into the town hall in person instead of mailing. We picked up the extra copies the same day...super easy.

They don't have to be certified for the application anymore, as it says on the USCIS website. Just provide the original at the interview if requested.

Shoot for the moon - even if you miss, you'll land among the stars...

ROC completed in 06/2012
