Question on rings

Hi all,

I would like the advice and suggestions of the forum.

My fiancee just received her visa (yeah) and she is planning to come to the U.S. and NY in August. I asked her to marry me and she said yes (yeah, yeah). My question is this:

I did not buy her an engagement ring yet and now with immigration saying that we must get married within 90 days upon her arrival at the POE, Should I buy just our wedding bands or someone told me that I might be able to buy as a set our wedding bands and an engagement ring for her to match the wedding band. I never heard of this.

My fiancee would be happy with anything (I think) however I have never been in this position before and would like to do the right thing.

What do you think I should do?

Thank you for your advice and suggestions. :)

I would let her choose an engagement ring.....personally I would wait til she got here and go ring shopping...or find a website link to send her and ask her to send some pics of the ones she likes so you get an idea of the kind of jewellery she prefers...

Good luck!

Good idea  If she's like a lot of girls, she's probably got a style in mind that she likes and will by happy to steer you in the right direction. I know my husband has seen about a million rings I like

I hope you two have a happy reunion!

It all depends on what she wants! If she wants an engagement ring with her wedding band I would do like the others suggested and definitely let her pick them out - unless of course you already know what she would like. Then it would be nice to suprise her with it! :)

Well...

I respect the fact that guys let their fiancees pick their engagement ring. I also think, that if she's not expecting one, and if you want to buy one for her, it would be REALLY nice if you surprised her with it. (Im a hopeless romantic, and I think that back in the days women did not pick their rings, men bought and offered them, it's part of the acceptance process).

Cause if you pick your own ring, how are you supposed to be excited, surprised and even cry at the proposal??? right?? I dunno...

I would let her choose her own engagement ring but go ring shopping together and choose it together. You could still surprise her by taking her out when she arrives and going to a jewellers, then telling her that you would like to buy her an engagement ring. She will feel the romance of the surprise, but also appreciate your consideration in allowing her to find something she likes:-). You could ask her if she wants an engagement ring/ wedding ring set and look at those as well. Trust me, this is also a really fun type of date- it is what my husband and I did, and I loved it.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I didn't pick my ring, but was offered several web links to 'steer him in the right direction'. I don't wear much jewelry so he didn't have much to go on before I told him my 'style'. The one he would have picked without my help is the one I veered toward myself anyway.

And I still bawled like a baby when he proposed.

Yeah I would go with what others have said let her choose her engagement ring after all she is the one wearing it for the rest of her life:) I believe you can get matching sets too.

I was so shocked when I got my engagement ring last christmas eve!! We actually went shopping and I persuaded him to come into a jewerly shop to just try rings on as I didnt have any idea what my size was, actually I was trying to get him to get me one lol. I tried a few rings on and finally found one I really liked but it was quite expensive and he kinda said something like "oh well never mind we will have to get ya a cheaper one and I have to save up first" :( bummer I was upset:( anyways we got the ring size etc (dont ask me what it is as I forgot lol). Come christmas eve he surprised me with a toy kitten in the boots that he got me as a present - it had a ring tied around a string on its neck - this is where he proposed lol To my utter shock and suprise the ring was exactly the same one I picked but the diamond was a bit smaller, (he said he wants to get a bigger diamond later when he can afford to) nevertheless I loved it as it was what I wanted, and the size was exact!!! Later on he told me he actually bought the ring well before I got there!! and it was amazing it was exactly what I wanted and the right size:) umm and we have never really talked what rings we wanted before!! Talk about being intune with me lol

Ask her about it. She may not even want one. I didn't want one as I never wear jewelry, so getting a ring would just be wasted on me.

We picked out Lai's engagement ring together. She found three rings at two stores that she liked, and then I secretly picked out one of the three for her. There was no surprise at the proposal or the ring (other than which one I would choose), since the day of the proposal was planned well in advance. She still cried, though

Wait and see what she wants... I didn't want an engagement ring. We're having our rings custom made to be more personal and unique to our relationship.

Well, she already agreed to marry you even without a ring.

I have to agree with everyone else as far as finding out what she wants. If she only wants the wedding band, that's cool, but if she wants an engagement ring, go for it.

You can get some very beautiful sets (engagement ring and wedding ring together) that you take back to the jeweler after the wedding to solder together. That's what I had for my first marriage.

This time, I don't even want an engagement ring. We have more important things to spend money on IMO (like plane tickets). and I really don't wear much jewelry so a big rock blingin on my finger isn't really me.

I've told him I just want a plain silver band when we're married and that's it.

Good luck, and have fun looking at jewelry with her! :D

Yes there are sets, just like Charles explained above, you can buy your wedding ring and her wedding band plus an engagement ring to match the wedding band. If you can afford why not? (please don't take offense, but obviously only the wedding band is less expensive than buying both, since she doesn't need an engagement ring at this point)

My fiancee would be happy with anything (I think) however I have never been in this position before and would like to do the right thing.

As for her being happy with anything, really, if you know her well enough surprise her. Go on and buy her the ring, women like that.

In my case I prefer to chose the ring together with Charles (that's what we did), because I'll be wearing it for the rest of my life, but that's me.

Good luck! I'm sure whatever decision you make she'll be happy, after all, what really matters is you being together, the ring is just a symbol.
