Thanti had just arrived in the USA on Friday, so we were planning to take things easy this weekend, let her settle in, jet lag and all, and not make any definitive plans.

As it was, we were invited to my cousin's birthday on the 4th. He lives a short walk from the Lakeshore about equidistant between downtown Chicago (south) and Evanston (north). The big fireworks display in Chicago are at Navy Pier on July 3rd, and they leave each municipality and suburb to do their own displays on the 4th. However after the birthday party we walked over to the lake and were able to see both Evanston and Chicago displays to either side of us. It was quite a lot of fun, and a great welcome to America for Thanti. Today (Sunday) we went shopping at Home Depot, bought a bunch of gardening supplies and a swing, spent the afternoon in our backyard and had a romantic dinner on the patio, including rocking on our new swing, and alll was well with the world      ..........

....except the skeeters :ranting:

I hope you didn't bring the sheep, the noise would have terrified them.

Washinton DC was incredible! They shoot them off right between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. They put a great all day 4th of July celebration in DC. I was very impressed with every aspect of the entire day's celebration :thumbs:

Peace,

MarkNAAm

that must have been so awesome to see....

The bad news was the terrible condition the people left Veterans Park and National Ave. in after the fireworks and parade. Aluminum cans, plastic bottles, food wrappings everywhere, as far as the eye could see. What a bunch of slobs we have in this country, disgusting. Most alarming to me is the condition they left the lawns of the private residents they used to watch these events, if it was my lawn, would be out with a shotgun, no reason for that.

Yeah, Crane's Roost was a mess as well, Nick...it's absolutely deplorable. We had made a bit of a mess ourselves, with all of our water bottles, food, etc...but as soon as the fireworks were over, we collected everything and put it in the bin...which was literally like 10 feet away. They had bins all over the place...I mean how hard is it?

The next day, in the mall pkg lot, I passed half eaten watermelon slices all over the place. Wrappers, empty bottles, etc. Seriously, are people slobs or what!

Do I dare mention the public restrooms? They make that toilet scene in that Desperado movie look like a very clean place to go. And what's with this two inch wide toilet paper mounted in dispensers that won't dispense mounted a foot above the floor?

There were porto-potties where we were. I didn't even look in them. I walked about 2 miles round trip to the gas station to go pee...plus, I bought us some cheap eats and drinks while I was there.

Should have never rented that Robin Williams movie, RV, that was really sick. We had our motorhome with us, wife didn't want to put me through that mess, but was happy to use it after she peaked in those porta-potty places. Just told her, I never see the stuff, but one time, I do wear gloves. Ha, she learned how to use the gas range, how to turn on the generator to use the micro, and the refrigerator had enough drinks to last a month.

What comes out is a function of what goes in, watch out for those restaurants that serve bricks.

NYC was wack this year. The city moved the fireworks to the otherside of the island, but didn't plan enough how to let the crowds reach the river. And not only that, but they just had no umph this year.

Shoulda just stayed in Coney Island for the beach parties & havoc... <_<
