I have been focusing on my CR-1, have all the forms completed and signed. Now it looks like the CR-1 will be held up and my K-3 actually complete before the CR-1. I know what steps will occur with the CR-1 after USCIS sends it to NVC. Are these basically the same for the K-3 except for completing the DS-156 for the K-3 instead of DS-230 for the CR-1? I have looked for a timeline comparing the two processes, can someone point me to it.

The I-129F for the K-3 generally only stays at NVC for a short pitstop. It is assigned a case number and then its off to the consulate post. Thats providing its not held up with security checks. No other forms need to be submitted until the interview stage. CR-1 as you know involves a lot more at NVC stage.

Once I-129F(K3) gets a case # from NVC its sent to the Embassy for more processing, the beneficiary will then be sent out a pack of forms to fill out & return along with a check list & readiness for interview form, when these are processed then pack 4( interview letter) will be sent.

After your I-129F is approved, your case will be forwarded to NVC where it won't stay long. NVC will give it a case number and forward it to the embassy/consulate in Taiwan. The beneficiary will then get packet 3 which includes a bunch of info and forms (DS-230 and DS-156 included). The beneficiary has to submit the DS-230 (Part 1, if I remember correctly) and send in the checklist. Then you wait for an interview date. I've been doing both the K-3 and CR-1. Have a look at my signature.

Good luck!

Edit: Wow! Aussiewench and euro are fast. They got their responses in in the time I took to write my response.

The processing time will depend on how busy your consulate is. By the way, my husband had to fill out I-134 (Affidavit of Support) for the K-3.

It does depend on a few things like getting caught up in security checks etc but an approx time for a K-3 petition could be say 2-3 weeks at NVC where as for the CR-1 process it will be approx 3 months to case complete depending again on security checks and also the time it takes for the forms and bills to go back and forth. Hope that helps a little more.
