The border crossing was odd.....they did not seem to know what they were doing. The 2 doing it had not done a K1 before. They charged me $6 each to put a paper in my passport so I could cross and come back ( I think that is wrong). I had to keep correcting them on everything. The one lady was saying K1 was for married couples only and I corrected her but she did not believe me until another officer told her that I was right. It was really weird and I hope they did not screw anything up.

The $6.00 fee was correct.... it's just an entry processing fee that K-1's and K-2's pay at POE.

They were incorrect to tell you that you can enter the US and then cross back into Canada. You will need either AP or your GC in order to travel outside the US.

Is this $6 fee something new? I've only started reading about this recently. Do you pay in USD or CAD, and are credit cards ok?

The $6 US fee was for the I-94 document that they put within your passport. It is called an entry-exit visa and it, or the VWP version, is regularly given to all individuals except Canadians upon entry to the US. It is basically your permission for how long you can stay in the US, unless you apply to change your status (AOS). Hold on to that piece of paper - it is important!

When you apply for your Adjustment of Status you will need to include a copy of the I-94 as part of the application submission. Leave it in your passport. If while you are waiting to have your AOS adjudicated and you have applied for and received an Advance Parole document (AP), you can leave the country, but you will need to surrender that I-94 upon exit. Upon re-entry to the US you will be issued a new I-94 based upon the AP. Keep that as it will be the one you then have to show in your passport when you have your AOS interview. It will be removed at the interview when your AOS is approved. So, keep that piece of paper safe because it is very expensive to replace it if you lose it.

Ok well good to know. They want USD or credit card only. Thankfully I had cash cuz I don't do credit cards.
