Hi guys,

Thanks for all the thorough discussion.

I got my PR status through family reunion from my dad's brother, and now I am eligible for naturalization. One thing though, is that I am the only person naturalizing, whereas my other family members are doing it later. Will that affect my process? Also, what if they become not eligible to naturalize, does that affect my naturalization process too ?

Thanks,

Hi Transformer2009,

I'm not an expert or anything like that....But based on a guess and what I've read about the requirements of naturalization, the answer would be "no".

Your family members can choose to be US citizens or just be a PR, as it's ultimately up to them to decide. However, their choice does not affect your choice of wanting to be a US Citizen at all. After all, you are a grown adult and can make the choice for yourself, without input from others required.

The only circumstance that their decisions would be an issue is if you were a minor child under 18 and you wanted to gain citizenship through your parents, then in that case your parent would have to be a citizen the same time as you do or you would have to wait until you are over 18 to apply by yourself under the 5 year rule. (but I don't think this situation applies to you though).

So yes, go ahead and apply for US Citizenship when you have met all the requirements for such (either under the 5 year general rule, the 1 year military rule, or the 3 year marriage rule, along with the other US residency rules).

Who knows, maybe if your family sees that you are a US Citizen, they might want to apply for such themselves afterwards also.

Hope that helps. Good luck on the rest of your immigration journey too.

Ant
