K-2 cannot receive a SSN until after AOS is complete (green card). You will either need to enter "pending" for his SSN number on the bankruptcy filing (works for the IRS, why not bankruptcy court?) or not list your son.

Look at the guides on this site. It says that K2 need an EAD in order to get an SS.

Sorry, yes EAD will also work, I presumed your son to be under working age as you stated you were told he "did not need one". For example, I did no tapply for an EAD with our 13 yr. old son's AOS
