  1. 1. You have private health insurance. There is a new government-run health insurance plan available. You compare both plans on paper and they appear identical in every way except premiums. Premiums for the government-plan are 10% less than your existing private insurance. Do you switch over to the government-run plan?

It would have to be more than 10% for most people to want to switch, because any "plan" produced by the government is usually #######.

I was inclined to reply with something similar but I reread. The plans are identical except for the premiums. Well, identical "on paper". Why add the "on paper" part? That part still throws me off though. Identical on paper but the govt ins crappier in reality?

Two plans can promise identical coverages for a procedure but the claimant's experiences can be drastically different depending on customer service and other factors.

and to me-that's the thing. The coverage might be the same on paper-the premiums may even be cheaper...but is my waiting time going to be longer on the Govt run plan, or is my choice of facility or specialist going to actually be hindered or even delayed by my coverage by the Govt plan ( i.e more people using the specialist that accepts the Govt insurance = longer waits...etc)? Is my choice of appointment times going to be more limited because the block of time set aside for "Govt insurance patients" isn't going to be big enough to accomodate everyone......( I've seen this happen in the UK).

Call it socialized medicine, NHS whatever...to me..it means longer wait times for the fewer doctors/facilities and specialists that work for the Govt plan in relation to the numbers using it.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Dunno that I'm wild about my private insurance either. I just recently spent a morning crying with frustration because of a sinus infection, and trying to find a doctor in my "network" who could see me same day (AND trying to get two customer reps to give me the same answer about WHO the available doctors were!!!)-- what sort of shape would I be in if I had something more serious???

Also, I think that there's a question missing. I answered no I wouldn't switch all things being equal. Others may have had different answers if they were starting from scratch. I wouldn't switch more from the desire of not having to deal with any complications arising from switching. Belonging to neither and then choosing might yield different answers.
