You do make a good point, I should be careful. After those atomic bomb tests on Pitcairn Atoll in the 1950's, you don't want to make them angry. You wouldn't like them when they're angry.

You have experience with that kind of thing though. I am sure you could deal :D And sock puppets by their nature can't go all Hulk, right?

Unless the sock puppet is Canadian. I'm not sure if Canadian sock puppets can go Hulk, maybe GiGii knows. But they can certainly change their gender at will.

Time to start of new lively thread:

Last month before Alla left for her hometown for a month-long vacation, as we had a long Skype session, we began to talk about what foods we both like.

She stated that she really like Kefir. No Problem, we have that here, also in many flavors.

(After a brief session of "No Understand?" She pronounced it "ke-FEAR" and it took me a few seconds to intrepret that as "KEE-fir". Reminds me of the time she was talking about her friend's fiance (K-1 also and no NOA2 after 5 months!). Genia's fiance is from pa-NAM-a. Oh, I get it, PAN-a-ma. Isn't communicating wonderful!!??)

The other thing she loves, and makes herself is "Home Cheese". After sending her a bunch of links to Russian cheeses offered in the specialty stores around Chicago, we both figured out she was talking about Tvorog.

I have found a couple of recipes on the Internet and I told her I would try to make some and see how it turns out.

I know I WILL HAVE TO LIKE home cheese!!!

Alla makes some awesome meatballs, not sure that they are particularly "Ukrainian" but they are damn good. The little pastries (like perogies) filled with cherries! Her multi layer cakes! I like borsch, she hates to make it, we have an agreement. :)

And I am REALLY turned on any time she ISN'T eating that stinky, salty fish #######!!!!!!!!!!

There's still an updraft!

I always forget about the updraft, and of course you can always "accidentally" drop something and have to pick it up.

Oh look! A penny!

And um, that's just not right!

Ditto

It may not be right but it certainly isnt wrong and it feels soooo good

:bonk:

:huh::hehe:

You realize that if we don't quit with the emotaspeak, we will be restricted to kvas only at the next imaginary forum party.

I like KBAC!!!! It is what root beer should be! I am not so sure about the sanitary conditions of it's making, but it is better than drinking the water!

Since we're resurrecting old threads, I just have to say that PB&J blini is the shiz. Anyone else have any Americanized versions of motherland favorites?

Nope, none that I can think of. You just cannot do anything with the salty fish  I think Vika would like a salty fish scented air freshener though.

On a related note, I was surprised how similar (as in EXACTLY alike) some of our dishes are to the traditional Eastern European fare. Pilmeni and galupsi come immediately to mind.

Just put maple syrup on blini and call it pancakes already.

Salty fish...

Alla loves maple syrup and has since day one. My MIL would not eat it...convinced it was some capitalist chemical concoction. So I was bringing the stuff to Ukraine in increasing amounts, I get it right from the tree in Vermont. Meanwhile Alla is trying to convince her mom it is OK, it is "all natural" Alla started increasing her requests for syrup, up from quarts to half gallons to 4 gallons on my last visit!!! (before she got her visa) Plays hell with the luggage weight restrictions! What gives.? Who knows? Maybe the kids are eating all of it? Then she catches her mom drinking a glass of it STRAIGHT UP one morning. Turns out she has decided it is "good for the stomach" and is chugging a glass every morning!!!!!!!

Anyway, syrup on blimi's has the approval of Ukrainians in this household!

whenever Alla gives me the "I waited in line to buy a half cucumber...." speech I say "No one waited in line for that salty fish #######, did they?"

I don't know about "Americanizing" any of the traditional favorites, but I definitely don't skimp on the mayo or sour cream anymore. If it can have mayo or sour cream, it will have mayo or sour cream.

PB&J blini is in the queue.

Most people from the FSU like it. Although it can be too sweet sometimes.

Reminds me of that scene from the movie SuperTroopers. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0247745/

Maple Syrup factory...here is another money making idea we can bring from the west to FSU.

What were the other things the stand was going to sell, peanut butter, and ???
