I am scheduled for an interview on the 2nd week of August (NJ). However, we did not extend our lease which expires july 31st. We are planning to go on a vacation to my country for about 6 months after my interview. In the meantime, my husband will be in jamaica to work on our rental house while my daughters and I stay in NY with my sis, until after my interview in Newark.

My question is how will this affect my application? I cannot extend for a month in this apartment beause a tenant is ready to move in next month.

Thank you very much for any advice.

From what I understand, you need to be resident in an area for 3 months before filing, not before the interview, therefore I would hope that it doesn't matter, but I do not know exactly.

I am in the same situation whereby my lease is also up on July 31 and I have two potential job offers out of state. Neither of which I have actually received, but I feel good about them, so fingers crossed! If I do get one or the other (or both), it would mean a move out of Florida just days before my naturalization interview. In this economy it would be stupid to turn down a job. While it's possible that I can come back for the interview, I would still have to ask the IO to not schedule my oath for Tampa and instead for the closest oath ceremony center to whererever I live at that stage.

So, I too am interested in an answer to this...should an address change outside of the area your district office handles matter during the naturalization interview....anyone have thoughts on this?

Is your new address still in the same District Office jurisdiction? If so, then I wouldn't think there'd be a delay. If not, then you will have to wait for the case to be transferred and a new interview scheduled.

The fact that you and your husband won't be living together when you have your interview could be an issue since you are applying under the 3 year rule.

When you attend your interview; bring proof that you notified your change of address (and of course, notify through AR-11 and I-865). If your address is not updated, you might run into problems and you don't want that. Best of luck :)

Thanks J&D and jsnearline.

I called up USCIS 3x (since I get different answers sometmes) and this time, they gave me the same answer - that my interview may be delayed because if I move out of state, my papers will have to be transferred to the DO that has jurisdiction over the place where I moved in. One of them said I have to be a resident for 90 days at the time of the interview.

There's only a 12-day gap From the time that we leave the apartment to the date of my interview, so, I was thinking we could stay with a good friend in NJ for the time being and therefore, use her address.

As for my husband's absence, i don't think that's considered "not living together" since he's just away for an official business trip. My daughters and I cannot go with him because I have to stay for my interview.

Those are just my thoughts. I don't know what other options I have right now.

thanks, guys, for the reply.

jeangab, I have a non-refundable ticket to my country for the 19th of August. So, time is really an issue. I would have just let them transfer my papers to my new address.

len, thanks for the reminder, i never thought of that.

For my interview, my IO checked the details of my Drivers License for my current address. I expect you would have to tell him/her that you have moved.

I'm not sure of exactly how everything will affect you, but I see quite a few areas of concern:

  • all the thoughts mentioned above re change of address options and how it will affect your interview
  • you are planning to be out of the country for 6 months a week after the interview. This gives little time to get a US passport, should oath ceremony be the same day, and would be an awfully long time to delay the oath ceremony should you be approved, but cannot (or decide not to) take oath the same day,
  • Your daughters may also become citizens when you do, and so may need US passports so that they can re-enter the US
Best of luck!
