Hi,

I just want to know if someone has tried bringing a laptop at their point of entries? My point of entry is LA and I will be entering on a K1 visa this July. I want to bring the laptop my fiance gave me from US when he came to Philippines. Are there requirements? Will I have problems with customs? What do they usually do to your laptop?

Thanks.

It's your personal belonging. Why would you have trouble bringing in your personal belonging? That's the equivalent to asking if you'll have a problem bringing in your camera.

My wife brought one and I have brought one every time I have entered the US for the past 8-9 years or so (as long as I have had a laptop) No problem. Upon entering, if your laptop was a carry on they usually do nothing. Sometimes they take it out to look at it and make you turn it on to prove it is really a computer and not something else disguised as a computer.

You'll have to take it out of the case and place it my itself in a plastic bin so it can be X-rayed.

I'm taking mine with me and thus far haven't seen anyone have any problems bringing a laptop.

After all, business travellers take laptops with them all the time.

That's when you LEAVE Baron, in order to take in on the plane. When you arrive you do not do that unless asked by customs.

They scanned my stuff just after going through customs at JFK, so got scanned both ways. Also both ways in Kiev. Not a problem.

The distinction is that the inbound scan at US Customs is by selection.... I have had it both ways....

Not a K-1 issue - moving thread

I also wondered about bringing a laptop over, as far as duty goes. Visitors are only allowed a certain value of stuff, so I wondered how the laptop fits into that. Especially if the USC pays customs fees/duty to bring it to the other country, it seems like double-taxation to pay again when bringing it back.

Think of it as you would a piece of jewellery. No one is going to ask you to pay duty on your diamond earrings while you are visiting. If you are moving here, personal and household items are duty free.

I was under the impression that all more expensive electronic items required serial numbers posted on the list of personal effects being imported.

I"ve traveled to several places and back, I've never had any problem with the laptop. I recalled maybe once, they would just ask to turn it on and the moment the light came up and from the boot screen, the guy said it's ok, then i just turned it off, but that was only once.

Laptops are common items in everyone's carry on bags these days. It's not a big deal. Let them scan it if they ask, if they don't then consider your welcome-to-america moment..well..peachy.
