I liked this site because they had a player where you could actually hear the phrases and words being spoken as well. Helps to learn how to say them correctly and also how to spell them...

I think I am going to try to learn the phrases for things like: 'Oh No, I said that wrong' first!

Nagkamali ako. I made a mistake.

Patawarin mo ako. Forgive me.

That way if I am speaking to her on the phone and something comes out wrong, I can quickly tell her that I am sorry!!!!

She may just think I am still an idiot anyway, but I am determined to try and 'sweetalk' her some in Tagalog!!!

You have made it under my radar. I can't respond to your post without knowing where you are coming from. I am not sure why you would be at that point in your relationship, or lack there of. So please tell us the story, or at least fill in your timeline. If there is a link where you told your story before, that will work as well.

I did see this link you have when looking around...

But the link I posted was better for me because it would help me learn the pronunciation as well. I found a pile of info for anyone wanting to learn about the language at that site I mentioned. I also found some great tabs there to learn the culture, food, literature... Hurt my head at first to see it all and realize that the more I learned the more I also learned that I did not know anything at all!!!

I bought the foreign language course with all the CD's. I made tapes of the CD's to play in the truck between jobs. You might be able to get the Filipino news nightly where you live. I know it is on TV26 out of San Francisco here.

But for most the Filipinos themselves, Tagalog is not their native lanuage. Many speak a hybrid called Taglish. Further, because of the cheap text messaging, many of the text abbreviations are used in common speaking. It makes for a big mess for an outsider trying to learn the language.

My gal is a Cebuana, so I need to find something like that for Cebuano, heheh. She always giggles at me when I try to be affectionate in Cebuano with my subpar pronunciation. She also speaks Taglish, but her English is better. When we were in Manila she said it was better for me to talk to the locals in English than for her to use Tagalog. But the locals would just look at her and talk Tagalog anyways, heheh. We had to take turns when trying to communicate something difficult.

I speak bisaya too and i'd rather speak english than tagalog co'z i feel like i sound corny speaking tagalog with my "hard" accent hahaha. It is acceptable to commit wrong grammar in english but not in tagalog.

My husband is learning some bisaya words from me...and everytime he meet people from here he greet them in bisaya. It's cute to get a text message from him with all the visayan words he knew mixed up together just to make a sentence. Sounds like "Barok" the jungle language.
