Geico Auto Insr

I remember someone had mentioned that they had Geico Insr on their car for a while before they trans their car over to the US. If anyone has experience, please let me know :)

Since we don't have a permanent res, and i've got so much stuff on the go, I want to insr with Geico. I called for a quote.

I can't afford the State taxes to trans my registration right now, I plan on doing it after we file for AOS. Does anyone know if I will have issues trans my registration and DL 3 months after I imported my car at the POE? will they look at my import papers and raise issue with the fact that I imported in June and likely will trans in Sept?

I'm sure people have done it? I mean sometimes people park their cars for a while etc....

I think it was Kritit who had Geico? let me know.....

I figured it was better to get insured here, rather than driving around with my Canadian Insr.... Once we are settled in and I get my US registration on my car, I will get added on to my then 'husband's' policy.

I know they say you have to register your car within 60 or 90 days? But I need time to get my SSN, and money together for the taxes.

Any Canadian's with similar experience please let me know :)

I have Geico :) They are great! What I love the best is their free 24/7 emergency roadside service!

Anyhoo, I signed up with them well before I registered my car here. They didn't care that I had ON plates, didn't even ask for my plate number. When I got around to registering my car, I just showed my Geico proof of insurance, and that was that!

Thanks for posting about Geico here!!!!!!!!... I have them and my policy date was today.. I totally forgot about sending the money as I was focused on the USCIS packet...

Only info i can give regarding Geico..is that they insured me on Davids car to drive in the usa no questions asked. Also they were the only company willing to insure him when he drove up to montreal from chicago, as he needed to show proof of Cdn insurance ( or somethign like that). And they were cheaper than the company he had before.

I think we waited about 3 months to register our car and insure it here - I called Geico - Allstate was cheaper for the same coverage.

We are going to go with Allstate once I trans over all my stuff to US....fiance is with them now....and it will only cost $600 for the year to add my car.... but I assume they will only do US registered vehicles?

I had heard that Geico will insure a Canadian car and driver in US, that's why I called them.

I wonder if Allstate will do it? I should call my agent tmrw?

It's also gonna be about 4 months post move before I register in PA...I hope the DMV doesn't give me problems :( lol...

Hey Poprocks,

I had my car insured with Geico before I left Canada. I actually had it insured for the day I entered the USA. That was well before I registered my car in Hawaii. My insurer in Canada would not insure it to travel across the ocean, so we checked into Geico before we moved.

All that Geico needed was my Alberta DL #, the VIN of the car, and AB license plate #. It was insured in minutes through my husband's existing account. And even though HI has some of the highest insurance in the US, it was still $400 a year cheaper than I was paying in Canada.

I really like Geico (so far anyways).

with car insurance in the USA, it can really pay (or save) to phone around and get multiple quotes, the difference can be quite high!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yes, I don't remember what the difference was, but it was quite a difference.

As for Allstate insuring Canadian registered vehicles, i'm not sure poprocks - the day we got our new insurance we also registered the vehicle in the U.S.

Yes. I agree. It has also been our experience that credit rating also has a significant impact. Geico quoted us the best rate too.

I h ave Geico and did not know they had this?

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Ditto. I think my husband added me and my car to his Geico policy about a month after I got here. I wasn't able to actually register my car until I had my Florida driver's license..... and I couldn't get my Florida driver's license until I received my AOS NOA. So I think it was about 6 or 7 months after I arrived that I finally changed everything over. They don't really care about the length of time between entry and registration, Poprocks.

I would check with them! When I signed up, they advised me of this and also sent me little tickets in the mail to put in my wallet, car, etc. That say "Emergency Road Service" call toll free 24/7 at 1-800 etc.... It saved me from having to sign up with AAA!
