Looking forward to this - even though they did 'borrow' the characters and story from a certain well known PC adventure game.

Never played that game, but I thought it was "borrowed" from the Disneyland ride; there are several scenes that come directly from the ride :)

The name comes from that - but certain of the characters are derived exactly from the Secret of Monkey Island - zombie pirates? Hmmmmm...

Through my last job I had some experience with Disney's 'story' department to know a little about how they operate.

Believe me, its not the case that someone goes away and comes up with a 100% original script - they have entire libraries of old movies, books, video games and the like for the plundering of plot devices and the like.

That line from the original about "lashing together sea turtles to make a raft" is right out of SMI.

Well, in all fairness, I think I remember reading that Monkey Island borrowed from the Pirates of the Carribean ride. So it's Disney borrowing from Lucas borrowing from diseny.

There's nothing better than an original MI quote though.

You fight like a dairy farmer.

How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

I wouldn't say SMI borrowed from the Pirates ride. There is such a thing as parallel development of ideas (two people working independently come up with the same idea) - Regardless, a themepark ride is not a fictional narrative. There's no story there - there's certainly ideas for scenes. Therein lies the problem - you can't copyright ideas, only the specifics (e.g. characters and text), and in a genre that is dominated by well-known cliches (ask anyone to draw a pirate and you'll end up with something looking not unlike Long John Silver) the waters become extremely murky.

Its hard to say how directly influenced Lucasarts was by the ride - but certainly the story they came up with, and the characters were all original and would be theoretically copyrighted to them.

Paraphrasing is a form of plagiarism -

SMI features a zombie pirate called LeChuck. Simply renaming him as Captain Barbossa, doesn't escape from the fact that it's still fundamentally the same character.

In any case, I don't think many people really care about this - as both products SMI are the property of large corporations (Lucasarts and Disney respectively), there probably isn't much of a copyright issue there (knowing how jealously those guys guard their Intellectual Property), but for your average hack writer, such plundering of your creative material is a source of constant irritation.

A: Monkey Island rocked. My parents bought it for me because I could play it in German and thereby practice my language skills.

B: I'm going to see POTC2 TONIGHT! *squee!*

To paraphrase my ex, who was going to see the first movie with me for a third time (and being heckled by his co-workers at the tattoo shop): "Johnny Depp in eyeliner gets her hot. I just want to be there when it happens."

The way to find out if you love someone or not, is by talking to them.

The more you talk to them the more you either hate them or love them.

 My husband and I plan to see it this weekend. (It's my turn to pick the film  as last week he wanted to see Superman.)

I'm excited it's finally out.... I've been looking forward to this since last year. Hope I won't be disappointed. I love Johnny Depp, too !
