Looking forward to this - even though they did 'borrow' the characters and story from a certain well known PC adventure game.

Never played that game, but I thought it was "borrowed" from the Disneyland ride; there are several scenes that come directly from the ride :)

The name comes from that - but certain of the characters are derived exactly from the Secret of Monkey Island - zombie pirates? Hmmmmm...

Through my last job I had some experience with Disney's 'story' department to know a little about how they operate.

Believe me, its not the case that someone goes away and comes up with a 100% original script - they have entire libraries of old movies, books, video games and the like for the plundering of plot devices and the like.

That line from the original about "lashing together sea turtles to make a raft" is right out of SMI.

Perhaps so. But certain scenes do come from the ride. An obvious one is the song "Yo, Ho...." sung by young Elizabeth Swann at the beginning and later with Captain Jack. I recall hearing the line, "Dead men tell no tales," though I don't recall the speaker and exact scene. The scene with the jailed pirates trying to get the dog to bring them the cell-door key is direct from the ride. There's also the scene on the pirate island with pirates chasing women around, very like the part in the ride with a pirate chasing a woman in circles. And there is a scene in one of the ship-to-ship battles that has the feel of the part of the ride where the gondola passes between a pirate ship and the town as the ship and the town trade cannon shots.

True. I'm not saying its a direct rip-off, just that certain characters appear to have been 'paraphrased' from the game to the movie. And you have to admit, the first movie would have lost something if they had removed the supernatural elements from the story.

In any case, this movie has to be somewhat better than the generally mediocre run of summer movies this year...

Yep. I'm definitely looking forward to it, and it's a foregone conclusion I'll be buying the DVD

Well, in all fairness, I think I remember reading that Monkey Island borrowed from the Pirates of the Carribean ride. So it's Disney borrowing from Lucas borrowing from diseny.

There's nothing better than an original MI quote though.

How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

Johnny Depp in eye liner. I won't miss that.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
