And I did not say missing out. I said uni-dimensional. And like you said, goes both ways. Someone whose only topic of conversation is the latest in politics OR the ultimate baby formula is not a very complete human being. Again, cuts both ways.

This is my fear. What if i go from being Al Hayat Zween, Socialist Educator and Emancipator, to being... to talking about diaper rash and peanut allergies? What if all my plans to teach the little bug about the politics of James Brown and Fela Kuti and Bruce Springsteen get hogwashed by SpongeBob & dare i say... Hannah Montanna?!

i don't know if i'm cut out for this gig... :(

You and me both, sister.

:o You just call me sister Al Hayat, and I shall stop that Hannah Montana nonsense!!!

Thanks, Sister!

We may have to move to the faraway Sahara and eat cactus roots for a decade, all to avoid Hannah Montanna...

That little tart is probably there too - she's probably performing in the KSA unbeknownst to the rest of us for the King's daughters or something.

And that is great! generations ago, you had to get married and have children or you were nothing. Did we fight the feminism battle just to change that to "have a degree and a career or you are nothing"? No! is one option more worthy than the other? No! Family is the base of society, and a mother that chooses to stay at home and build a strong family life with solid values makes an invaluable contribution to society, just as worthy as any professional

Women have been letting others define who they should be for much too long, we must break away from those chains and be who we want to be! Mothers, professionals, both...We have the freedom to choose how to live our lives

I come from a long line of not very well educated but very hard working people. My grandparents didn't finish high school and my grandma had to work as a waitress most of her life to make ends meet in the family even into her 60's. They didn't get to stay at home with the kids sometimes. Being educated or not has nothing to do with whether someone wants to work or stay at home. I have a degree, and very much enjoyed college but never had a job afterward that I liked much so I don't have a big career drive in the traditional sense. To me that is busting my butt for someone else all the time, unless you actually love what you do. I will work again in the future one day, I am not sure doing what though, and I don't look forward to it haha. It has to be something I like, if doing my own thing like I do right now gets successful then I will stick with that. I know plenty of women who got a degree but ended up staying at home for years with kids growing up and went back to work or just did their own thing after that. Who cares, it's their life.

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

It has to be something I like, if doing my own thing like I do right now gets successful then I will stick with that. I know plenty of women who got a degree but ended up staying at home for years with kids growing up and went back to work or just did their own thing after that. Who cares, it's their life.

I gave up my career in the Navy to stay home with my babies for 8 years. Meanwhile, I managed to complete my bachelor's degree. Once the kids were both in school, I re-entered the workforce and am now successfully employed once again. It was a great choice for me and I don't regret any of it. I think it's great that women now have the option to choose how to live their lives, whether it be to stay home or go to work (WELL IF they can financially afford to stay home...it was not easy, but we did it). As for converstional topics mentioned earlier, I am in no way intrigued by baby/kid talk most of the time, so this did not happen to me. I had many other interests besides my children. I think this happens when the mother has no outside interests in her life other than the children, and this is not healthy, for her or the children. As for the main topic, personally, I don't like babies (or other people's children), never did and never will. But when it's your own children, the love is so strong you can put up with the baby years until they turn into the most adorable children you have ever seen. :-P As for travel, we always were able to travel with the children. They have been little travelers from day one, including long overseas flights. Granted, you are not as carefree in traveling with children as not, but it still can be done and you can still have a good time. A lot of people mistakenly believe that having a child should limit their life, but it doesn't really. You just have to incorporate your children into your life. It's a family, not a slave/master relationship.

Well, this honestly makes me feel better.

No grass has grown under these feet for a while, and when i finally came out and told some friends i was in the family-way... the first thing they said was: Well, guess you won't be traveling anywhere for a while...

It was almost like they were happy that i wouldn't be able to travel, which is something i love to do!

i said, "What? What does that mean? You think i can't bring a kid with me? What's wrong with you?"

 Peoples get me mad sometimes!

Sister elm... #######!! I am n azz-kicking academishy commie! Does this mean we cannot go and get manicures together ??? :crying:

Sure -- after you finish inculcating the masses, and I finish trampling them under my feet, we can go to the nail spa. You really should see my local one: they bathe your feet in hammered brass bowls and while you relax in cushioned rattan recliners and new agey music plays. Tis the best. :star:

I iz jealous. Very, very jealous. :wow: I can't wait till I have to go back to LA - I will totally be making an appointment with them.

It's worth the extra, believe me. The leg massages are amazing.

just make sure you don't break your nails hermana... that would be just wrong!!

I'll wear teflon gloves.
