sister Caro -- I don't hate babies - though some mommies do drive me bonkers. I do find obnoxious when people think that EVERYONE just relishes talking about babies, or kids, or teething or play dates. :dead:

Some -note, some- women cease to be anything BUT mothers when they give birth. I think that's sad, and it takes away so much from that child, to see a uni-dimensional person as a mother. Just my .02

Darn straight you better don't :bonk:

:P

About being anything but mothers, I think its the person's choice, much like being all about your career. Feminism should be about choice and if a woman chooses to be a stay home mom, then I think that's great. Our moms did it and they were not uni-dimensional- they took care of us, husband and house with great pride. "Missing out" on a career can be just as controversial as "missing out" on having children, but if its not the thing for you and you make the decision from a point of personal freedom, then good for you

Saludos,

Caro

I think when you become a mom, it is a pretty over whelming experience, and babies take a whole lot of your life so you tend to seek out those in the same position. That's how it was for me many moons ago, anyway, some of the friendships I made when through those puking, shitting, gurgling, worrying times went away, but some carried onto the really good times of teenage years (pretty much the same as the baby years, they didn't change much they just became "different" :P) and now into the 20 somethings.

I am actually not a very maternal woman, and never have been despite having 3 children. I never took well to motherhood and can only hope I did ok....my kids seem to like me enough :P

However, I get harangues from friends and strangers (seemingly every nail technician I've met in the past year has given me a lecture about how I'm ruining my life by not having kids alongside my mani/pedi) at nearly every turn. I'm sorry, I do like kids, I adore my nephews, I like my friends' kids, but I do not want any of my own. Why is this so offensive to some people? Not everyone has the parent chip installed.

 OMG!!! Can u imagine NOT having time to get a mani/pedu cuz you're mommy'ing??? :P

It doesn't even bear considering. :dead: I was majorly bummed today when my local nail spa was closed due to the holiday -- my nails are in need, people, screw your holiday. :star:

Damn straight, Caro. I support your choice to be a mom, as I'm sure you support mine to be a corporate-####-kicking capitalist pig. :)

I am fortunate to come from a family where women have been university educated for at least 4 generations sister Caro -- . In my family, stay-at-home mothers are an oddity. Though mind you, we do have a couple of stay-at-home dads (no, I'm not jokin)... the poor guys have been through hell and back

And I did not say missing out. I said uni-dimensional. And like you said, goes both ways. Someone whose only topic of conversation is the latest in politics OR the ultimate baby formula is not a very complete human being. Again, cuts both ways.

Sister elm... #######!! I am n azz-kicking academishy commie! Does this mean we cannot go and get manicures together ??? :crying:

OMG! I know how you feel ! Perfect nails are a MUST.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Very well said Caro. I chose to be a SAHM for the time being. I'm not gonna be doing this forever. Heck no, I want to work someday again. First I said I'm staying home 6 years, then I said 4 years and now I"m saying maybe another 6 months and then I'll be done with it. I feel like there's so much more to life than being a SAHM and work backstage for the rest of my life. I'm 27, I didn't go to school for nothing. SAHMing is just another chapter and when that one closes, another one will open up for me and I'm sure a lot of SAHMs around here. Just because you are a stay at home mom doesn't mean you're stupid or even producing trailor trash. Not at all. I have chosen not to work for now because I don't want another person telling me that my son learned to crawl today or that my daughter learned to clap her hands today. I rather be there and see her learn it for myself. Might be stupid, I know but that's just me. Luckily, we are in a good position financially for me to stay home right now.

Hey*Len*...

My little sister (10 years younger than me) went to college and is quite sharp. However, as soon as she graduated, she got married and had kids. Now...her 2 boys are 7 & 4....and are AWESOME kids. My little sister is an incredibly great mom! I'm very impressed with her MomzSkillz.

However...I can't be around her for over 10 minutes...because...no matter what the current topic of conversation is...she will ultimately turn it around to a conversation of 'parenting'! Its like that is all she can think/talk about! She drives me whacky! How do I get her to snap out of it!

She needs a job <haha>

Peace!
