This is a legal immigration board so there shouldn't be much opposition to your view.

that's the irony of this place. it's full of loud mouthed illegal lovers. prolly shills in some state sponsored ministry in some country the principal export of which is illegals, and the entire economy of which depends upon "remittances".

Well, all jokes aside, my view on the subject at hand is: I do not support illegal immigration. I DO look down upon my fellow countrymen who have the "stick it up their asses gonna go live in US whether they want it or not" attitude, I believe in working hard to better your country as opposed to escaping to the US for a better life. I do understand some people are in dire situations and feel that it's die or find a way to other countries (not just US have problems with illegal immigration). I agree that the government is in serious need of an immigration reform and ways to reinforce illegal immigration prevention.

But in all this what bugs me, personally, is knowing that to the majority of americans, just for being foreign I'm automatically illegal, and if I try to explain that I married a citizen and we decided to live here then I'm a GC #######. And even if you say that to a fellow brazilian living here illegaly, they'll be against you and saying "at least I didn't marry just for the sake of the card". There's no attention to the fact that many of us living in US today coming from marriages or work visas might not have necessarily chosen to live here, but it's what was appropriate at the time. I tire of saying I'd return to Brazil any day, and I plan to, as soon as my husband and I find good opportunities there for us.

As for Spanish in schools, I was an exchange student in AZ in 1996, and they did have all spanish classes for the hispanic students, which were probably half of the entire school. Funny thing is, they wanted to place me in that class and I had to explain seriously that I knew way more English than I knew Spanish. They thought that since I spoke Portuguese it was the same thing.

Yeah and they all start crying and blaming America when "remittances" are down.

Yes dear see this is the way I was brought up to think but broke that chain a long time ago thank goodness. It is sad but I would say 90 % percent of the people who think this are ignorant and will always remain that way no matter how hard we try. I raised my daughter differently and you can see the differnce. peace

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

? Speaking Spanish is not a job requirement in SoCal. If it were, I would be unemployed and I had absolutely no difficulty finding a nice position :)

Not for all jobs...but just look in the want ads...a LOT of jobs state bilingual Spanish/English or must speak spanish. I don't speak spanish as well as I would like to, and would not be able to work there.

-Blu-

That's also regional.

In my neighborhood, if you actually want to work in the hoodie, they prefer to be bilingual Russian/English or Mandarin/English.

This is SO true...never thought about that before, growing up here in So. Cal.

The Neo-Nazi's were muscled out when the Ruby Ridge confrontation went down. That isn't going on anymore way up in Northern Idaho. There is a population of Hispanics of course. We did see increased gang violence coming from California to our surrounding areas of Boise in some parts of Nampa and Caldwell thus dubbed "little mexico". It seems there is a gang related shooting every other week out there but urban development are prospering and the cities are cleaning up and becoming more respectable again. A lot of Californian's move to Idaho and call it rich mans play ground. If you like doing outdoors stuff then it's the place for you as it's the most geographically and geologically diverse state in the union. It really is the gem state for more than one reason. I don't care for Eastern Washington as much as I enjoy Western Washington but I can say crossing the state line has a whole different air even the seven miles between Moscow and Pullman.

It stinks...

On the other side, some USC's get it when they say they "imported" their wife or husband for x-ignorant reason.

A lot of ignorance out there, but i like to think it's the exception and not the rule.

Yes, it's unfortunate that some of the folks (even here on VJ) have the mentality that importing their wife is good 'cus since they're giving her the american dream they'll be good lap dogs.

*sigh* If only my hubby wasn't a stubborn macho he'd accept me working and him staying home and we could live in Brasil from the get go, without all the USCIS hassle. Now he sees Brasil would have been better.
