So they put your english-speaking kid in a spanish-only class?

I call BS. Public schools are required to provide all children with an 'appropriate' education and for a child that speaks English, that isn't very appropriate.

Actually, I've seen the Spanish only classes at public schools in Washington too. Sometimes the public schools here are so overwhelmed this happens. If a class is full, occasionally a native-English speaker gets placed in the Spanish speaking class. It's not appropriate, but alas, it does happen.

It's called language immersion. Should work!

My sister and fiance and I are in an argument about this particular issue. Going through legal immigration ourselves, I understand why many people come here illegally. From the time away from loved ones, to the shear costs of some visas, I get why many people come here from poorer counties looking for better opportunities and to support their families back home. I get it.

I don't hate all the people coming here just based on that fact. I am more angry with our government for not coming up with better options. I don't like the fact that here in California, most job offers come with the caveat, "must speak spanish." I don't like that just about everywhere you look everything is in spanish and english. I don't like that my son was failing 3rd grade so many years ago, because they ONLY taught his class in spanish because HE, a BORN American was only one of three kids in his class that SPOKE english. There are MANY things wrong with the system of immigration here. However, to generalize millions of people as slackers, lazy or people who take advantage of all the freebies America hands out and none of them even appreciate it...well, lets just say it has lead to some very heated arguments between my sister and me...AND my fiancee who supports her prejudice.

What are your thoughts on this?

-Blu-(armed and ready)

I'm tired of trying to understand illegal immigration and no, I do not support it !

That's crazy...

In my old school, sometimes the ESL classes turned into Spanish-only classes but that was because the ESL teachers didn't know how to teach.

? Speaking Spanish is not a job requirement in SoCal. If it were, I would be unemployed and I had absolutely no difficulty finding a nice position :)

Not for all jobs...but just look in the want ads...a LOT of jobs state bilingual Spanish/English or must speak spanish. I don't speak spanish as well as I would like to, and would not be able to work there.

That's also regional.

In my neighborhood, if you actually want to work in the hoodie, they prefer to be bilingual Russian/English or Mandarin/English.

You should move to Idaho.

That's how it starts and why it's called an invasion - when natural born Americans are forced to move to other states.
