This is interesting reading re Puerto Rico.

When i was in college, there were campus-wide protests about how Puerto Rico should be granted complete independence... this was circa 1996-97...

That said, I think America is WAY too easy on students especially when it comes to learning another language. I took the one mandatory semester of Spanish I was required to take. I found that when I tried to speak any spanish to my spanish speaking mexican friends then, they were entertained. I didn't realize then there are MANY different languages that sound a lot alike. I learned more of the "street" (as the teacher called it) spanish and loved learning it. I wish our schools would do it like they do in Europe. You start learning other languages right along with your other studies throughout your whole school experience. Then you become somewhat fluent. Not like the cut rate way they taught it when I was in school, or even now.

Agreed.

And yes, my views on illegal immigration have changed since i began the K-1 process in 2007.

Indeed, it was a very liberal campus!

Of course, at least then, students were still protesting!

Do they even do that now, or do they just gripe via text message & Facebook?

Even if they gave independence to PR today, could they revoke the citizenship of the boricuas already born? Would they make the millions on boricuas in US illegal or extradite them? I don't think so, it'd have to be something along of the lines of "From today on, PRs are born PRs, not americans".

Btw, for those who didn't know, a puertorican birth certificate brings Nationality: american. They're not even Puerto Ricans.

There are A LOT of puerto ricans moving to Florida, NY or NJ in the past years ...

Not just NJ/NY but PA too. There are entire counties of northeast PA that are have gone Rican in the last few years. Heck, region homebuilders use images of Rican-looking families in their ads now.

And that must REALLY pizz off some racists.

And of course, to the eyes of most americans, they have no right to be there. Do Americans look down upon Hawaiians moving the mainland (serious question)?

Who the heck are Hawaiians? The only Hawaiians I know are on TV.

Isn't Hawaii some place to go on vacation?

This brings me to something else. I use to have a boss who preferred to be called African American (if a label were to be applied that is). She was born here in the US and in fact has never even visited another country. I countered with, being born here makes you AMERICAN, perhaps your ancestors were from Africa, but you are not.

This will stir this pot, I am sure. But here is my question. If we are to truely, someday, become a less racist country (btw, I personally don't believe there are different races, we are all the human race...there are only different ethnic backgrounds and ancestory, but that is a different thread), don't we need to eliminate the labels that separate our ethnic backgrounds? My ancestors were from Russia and The Czech Republic, but I call my self American.

Pretty much. Some protests are a rite of passage (*coolness*) on their way to selling out to the system.

It's a good question to ask, but America is so new, and there are SO many different kinds of people arriving all the time... it may take a while.

i was born here, and most of my family was born here... and still, people INSIST that i must be from somewhere else. This happens both here in the US or when i'm abroad.

Dang it! i am from JERSEY!

Citizenship is statutory to the Jones Act of 1917. It would really be a stupid move to revoke it retroactively given the incredible contributions US Citizens from PR have made to the US as a nation in blood, sweat, and even tears. Of course... proactively it could happen just the way you describe... and that scares the Jesus out of those that want to continue living off of handouts instead of working for a better future.

Nationality in the legal, citizenship sense, yes. US (American). In the nationality-cultural sense, very much Puerto Ricans. That's why Puerto Ricans can't be considered like Texans, etc. It is a different national identity, a colonized one.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
