Dunno, my husband and his family and everyone I know are for the political party going for statehood, since staying as is sucks and if they go independent the island will be worst than Haiti.

My pops was a PNP politician and 95% of my familia is too.

The whole 'independence = instant misery is an old argument that resonated in a Cold War era that doesn't exist anymore and never made sense to people that keep a closer eye on the actual potential a nation has by the people it produces. Have they also used the Cuba will invade PR line too? Things don't work like that in a modern world where transition periods are set up with intelligence to create a healthy, vibrant economy to trade with the former colonial power, not become a banana republic. IMO... many estadistas have a near permanent case of self esteem issues.

Besides like I said... the US Congress will never grant it so I am not concerned about it happening either way.

Anyway... gotta go.

I don't know, as it is at times it seems it's already going the way of the dodo. Also, my husband is estadista but he's also a realista, meaning he knows things are not gonna change anytime soon. The Haiti comment was all mine, not his, 'cus I see things going downhill around here as is. The number of companies closing, the amount of people on food stamps, way too many houses for sale, and the neverending spending. Boricuas shop like maniacs! :o

Oh trust me... its a comment I heard quite often among estadistas whenever the topic of independence bubbles up into an estadista thought circle. Things go downhill precisely because the colony is submissive to a colonial power, not because of homegrown talent... although of course, the situation isn't being helped by people trying to run things with third world ethics (same ones that ironically produce societies that send illegal immigration towards the US) thinking they are on a first world spending spree (and not that different from many US habits either).

You know there are many theories of how a colonized mind deals with the phenomenon of being subjugated. One of your countrymen, Paulo Freire, was an excellent resource in that field although his politics are usually used to discredit the excellent contributions to education and critical thinking pedagogy. I strongly believe that many Boricuas are merely playing out part of that colonialized mindtrap by seeking alternate escapes of pleasure and reward-seeking behavior of mass consumerism. Which is why the estadista mindset to me is quite the confused set of ideals given the causative factors. To tie it in to the topic though... if and when PR becomes independent... I wouldn't be surprised if many of the clear thinking estadistas would realize the mass hysteria brought about by years of colonialsim was merely that... and would move about to capitalize on strengthening the emerging nation alongside other clear thinking boricuas.

The rest could of course move to Orlando where they seem to think they'll be instantly taken care of. Being US Citizens, that must really pizz off a lot of people that avoid history books.

Being monolingual is nothing to be too proud of, you know?

One can be multi-lingual and still not speak Spanish, you know?

Very good point!

Hey, I completely agree. But if any job requires "X" language and you don't speak it, you are not qualified for it. End of story.

Tell me what language other than Spanish is required in this country for jobs that focus on US based customers and clients.

Depends on the region. Polish and Vietnamese come to mind in different places.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

As AHZ has pointed in a previous post, Russian and Mandarin in her neighborhood. Closer to home, there's a Gujarati-English bilingual position at the local library.

Google it up, homeboy.

Or use Bing instead, if you wish to not suffer from search overload and use the worlds first decision engine instead.

There are A LOT of puerto ricans moving to Florida, NY or NJ in the past years, there are not enough jobs in the island, too many people, too little space. And the whole idea of people not knowing PR is part of the US or that it's people are citizens, well, I have experience with it. 2 years before I started the K1 process I came to visit his family (he was always the one taking trips to Brasil) and since I was almost graduated, no job, etc. the US only gave me a one entry tourist visa. My POE was Miami, and they actually had to consider long and hard and get help from superiors to verify if I could indeed travel to Puerto Rico, because the flight back also goes through Miami, and they thought that would be a second entry.

Btw, I won't pretend I understand PR/US politics much. :P In fact, I dislike politics. Including Brazilian politics. I dislike Lula even more but that's another story.

And of course, to the eyes of most americans, they have no right to be there. Do Americans look down upon Hawaiians moving the mainland (serious question)?

As much as I like political arguments... the HAL 9000 of today is nearly post-political... particularly when it comes to the relationship of Borinquen with the US.

Your paragraph really does tie it back into the comment I made about getting greencarded though. There are plenty of ignorant morons out there that flunked history. Regarding the migratory habits of many islanders... there is a reason the JFK - SJU route is known as la Guagua Aerea. For the last 20 years though its been replaced by the MCO - SJU route.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Isn't Hawaii some place to go on vacation?

How about Obama? But I guess he is just a guy on TV too.

And Laura, I think your point is a good one. Americans wouldn't blink an eye if Hawaiians moved next door (maybe they would ask why the heck they would want to leave Hawaii!!!, but other than that, no issue), but many Americans would just think it was another illegal if a PR family moved in.
