I was struck by how small the airports are. I expected Pukulvo 2 to be a massive, confusing place where I would struggle to find my luggage . . . and Svetlana.

But it seemed like one of those airports you see in small U.S. cities. There was only one place for the luggage to come out. And you go through green customs line and, viola, there she was.

SPb has two airports. The one for travel within the CIS is considerably larger.

After having traveled through SVO2 and SVO1, I practically wept when I went through Pulkovo. Both times I've flown through there, I was off the plane, through immigration, baggage, and customs within 15 minutes. In fact, I was a little let down, as it didn't really feel like Russia to me without the gargantuan crowds, inept immigration officers, pushing, shoving, and lost baggage. And then someone shoved me out of the way from the taxi I was about to hire, and I knew instantly that I was back in the cold, hard bosom of Матери России.
