Hi,

So my fiance has posted the check for our K-1 application and the check has been banked so now the waiting begins I guess.

Just a few questions on what to do now,

We sent photo's, boarding passes, letter of intent, phone records, visa statements. Hopefully this is enough and we do not get a RFE as I'm not sure if we have anything else we could supply.

What should we be getting ready now?

Is it too early for her to do all the stuff for the affidavit of support? When should she begin this?

Can I start doing anything to help with my side of the process?

One thing I have a question on is with the interviews, what is the usual for the appointment time. ie is it one week after they advise of your date? Can you change the date? Is it bad if you change date?

Thanks in advance for any info in this nervous time.

I really think it is too early to start getting anything ready, just make sure you go about your relationship as normal and communicate more as you'll need to show proof of email and phone calls. It is too early to bother about affidavit of support, you would normally start this once you get the NOA2 so it isn't out of date by the interview, some would start when the embassy notifies them of the interview date(you get a month's notice). You can always change the date if need be but it's most advisable not to do that as you might then get a later date which would distrupt your plans of moving.

I hope that helps, just my opinion and others might think otherwise. All the best!

The time between the NOA1 and NOA2 is basically just a waiting game. However, you can prepare some things as you wait. For example, if your passport is going to expire within the next year, now may be a good time to renew it. If you have lost or don't have a birth certificate, then it may be a good time for you to obtain one. You could also get a head start on some of the paperwork and save the files on your computer, or refrain from signing and dating it until a later time. Police certificates are normally good for 6 months to a year as well, so if you're really ambitious you could start researching what you would need for that as well. If you really want to start the affidavit, you could have the USC obtain their tax transcripts or any other supporting evidence (eg. W2's, prof of assets if applicable) now if he/she doesn't already have it, as it would be one less thing to worry about. At any rate, it may be a good time for you to just familiarize yourself with the process and think ahead.

Interview dates are normally given at least 1 month in advance of the interview date, although each consulate is different. While it is possible to change your date, you may be sent to the back of the line and end up waiting weeks or even months to be assigned a new time. Unless its a very serious situation, its probably not worth trying to switch.

What you can do is do some research about what documents you might be needing for the next step. They vary by consulate. And also how long it will take to get some of them like the police report for example. Check the embassy reviews for other people's experiences as well as what questions were they asked. Go checking about where your SO might be required to do the medical check.

In short look ahead so that nothing gets you by surprise.

PEACE and good luck in the journey.

it is not too early to begin preparing for the interview. We had ALL interview documents and forms ready before we sent the petition. (except I-134 which I prepared at the last minute) Go to the embassy website, review the forms and documents needed and get going. You never know, a document could take weeks to locate. Personally I was reluctant to send anything until I knew we had everything needed in our hands. What's the point of making plans and finding out tat the last minute that you are missing something that will take weeks to obtain. Know and understand all the hurdles BEFORE you begin. There are tow threads active right now about applicants needing letters from fathers for a child's K-2 visa and the interview is coming, and the father is not cooperating. Hmmmmm. Do I hear "cha..ching!" $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

We had that covered before starting down the path. What good is it to drag a woman and two children down the road and then find out it is a dead end.

Besides it is so much more productive than staring at the USCIS online "update" system expecting something to change to pass the time. And when your petition is approved you will be ready to schedule the interview.

I started my police cert after NOA1 bearing in mind it takes 1 to 2 months to process and send back. Since its valid for 6 months (although I heard in some, a year), it should still work for an interview.

Also made a checklist of things to bring for the interview so we know what kind of things we're looking out. Mapping it out in tangible form makes it a lot easier than keeping it all jumbled up in your head.

Requested a tax transcript for 2008 taxes. Informed the co-sponsor ahead of time so they have some courtesy time to mull over the finer details.

Took some vaccines ahead of time. My Hep B and Help A apparently wore off, so I started those series with an actual record of vaccines this time for the medical later. Have MMR lined up next since its required by my embassy.

Made a conscious effort to start collecting 'continued relationship proof' such as taking out one chat log per month, saving phone records and bills per month, saving emails per month starting from the month the K1 was sent.

I even called the panel physician clinic ahead of time to make sure it was still there and operation and snuck in a few questions to the nurse on the standard procedures  You know how the internet often retains outdated information.

07/11/16 : NOA1

:guides: The guides here have a very nice overview of the process step by step, so you can have a very clear idea of what to expect down the road. But yes, you can start preparing documents for the interview, which also have a very nice list on the guides. Edited by Ladylethal

  • 2 weeks later...

So I have tried to make a bit of a checklist just so we can start thinking about stuff and find things if needed. Next I think I will work out who needs to prepare what things.

1. interview letter

2. interview checklist

3. birth certificate, long form original and copy

4. 2 original police certificates

5. 3 notarized i-134

6. supporting evidence of support:

original and copy of employer letter signed from your employer listing you job title, start date, your salary, and the status (full-time) of your position.

Tax tax returns original and copy last 3 years with W2's

3 or 4 pay stubs dated with last 3 months

7. intents to marry ( original and copy of each persons )

8. evidence of relationship: photos, cell records, emails, IMs, misc (travel receipts, etc)

9. NAO1 & NAO2 (in case they need it)

10. ds-230

11. ds-156

12. ds-156k

13. medical results

14. copy of 129f sent

All copies notarized.

Do they need letter from their bank?

Does a speeding ticket count against you on the police report?

Many thanks

Jason

So is my list a fair representation of what will be required?

Or is there parts missing or am I adding more than needed?
