well reinhard ... 3.7% of women reach their 38th week with the baby still in the breech position. there is still a tiny chance that she could flip around. is she face up or face down inside nani?

there are a few non-invasive techniques you guys can try if you feel comfortable. of course only you and nani (and her OB/GYN) can determine which choice, or choices, are best, but i thought i would put them out there for you! :D

Pelvic Tilt and Slant-board Exercise

This is probably the most well known alternative breech turning technique. The position of your baby will dictate which position works best. If baby has his/her back to your front, the slant-board exercise is most effective. If baby has his/her back to your back, the beanbag or pelvic tilt exercise will be most effective. The baby’s back and head are the heaviest parts and these techniques use gravity to push the baby’s head into the fundus, tuck it and then do a somersault into the vertex position.

Do this exercise on an empty stomach and discontinue for lightheadedness or shortness of breath. Realize that there will be some pressure exerted on the thorax (chest cavity) by the abdominal contents being pushed upward toward the mom's head. One question often asked about these techniques is, "wouldn't the heavier head keep the baby in that position?" These techniques do two very useful things.

1. It helps to disengage the baby from the pelvis and

2. When the baby's head comes up against the inside of the fundus, s/he is inclined to tuck his/her head and do a somersault into the vertex position.

Slant-board Exercise:

Lie on your back with your hips raised high on pillows or lie on an ironing board slanted at a 45-degree angle against a sofa. For lightheadedness you can us a small pillow under the right hip (if the "plank" is stable) to elevate some uterine pressure from the inferior vena cava (large vessel bringing blood back to the heart from the legs). This maneuver should not be tried if you have high blood pressure, heart problems or lung problems. Relax, breathe deeply, avoid tenseness.

An alternative is for Mom to also use pillows on a flat surface to raise hips 12-18" above shoulders.

Beanbag Chair or Pelvic Tilt Exercise:

Made an indention for your tummy and lie down on your front, again with your head lower than your hips. An alternative to this is to adopt an all fours position and slowly lower your chest to the floor (knee chest position), again so your hips are higher than your head. (This looks like the position recommended for prolapsed cord).

If done 10 minutes twice a day for 2-3 weeks after the 30th week the pelvic tilt had an 88.7-96% success rate in 744 patients. It is recommended that the pelvis be raised 9-12 inches above the head and be done on an empty stomach.

OB/GYN News Vol12, No.1

You need to do this several times a day for 10-15 minutes and you have to be persistent, as they do not usually turn on the first try. If the baby does turn, stand up slowly and talk a long walk or do some squats to try to help the baby settle into the vertex position.

Nani's getting pretty close, hopefully everything goes ok, I wouldn't worry too much just yet! Pretty much every unusual circumstance for childbirth has become 'routine' for doctors these days. It's worrying when it's your baby though, right? Fingers crossed!

Open leg vibes to you for that next ultrasound! I just had a level II ultrasound on Tuesday, and at 16 weeks two days, we could see that we are having a girl! I am thrilled, hubby is adjusting because he had his heart set on a boy.

I had a doctor's appointment today... everything was fine and I got to hear my baby's heartbeat... the nurse said you could hear the venterticals opening and closing.. they were making a kind of clicking noise....

I had some blood drawn a few weeks back to check for abnormalities with the baby and they all came back good :)

I have another appointment in 4 weeks.... still no word on my next ultrasound  .... I would like to find out what sex the baby is soon... relatives keep asking me if the baby is going to be a girl or a boy...... I also need to know what to register for soon....

Lately I have been having this feeling that we are going to have a girl....

I had the girl feeling too, and in my case it proved to be correct! How far along are you? Seems like it is most common for OBs to do the "big ultrasound" where you get to see whether it's a boy or a girl at about 20 weeks. I had a level II ultrasound at about 16 weeks only because it was part of the genetic screening process.

He is due January 7th,07

Congrats everyone!! Looks like VJ members have been busy!!

Reinhard, just remember that whatever way the baby is born is a good way, and if it is by a scheduled c-section, at least you have the comfort of knowing the date and being prepared! Either way, best of luck and looking to forward to hearing some good news :)

Kiki...adorable!! I've just under 10 weeks to go and just cannot wait to see our baby. We don't know if the baby is a boy or a girl, so that'll be a nice surprise for us. Although, I've had a feeling from the very start that I'm having a boy, and from the way I'm carrying, my mother and friends agree...we'll have to wait and find out!!
