I'm not pregnant yet... which I think is a good thing since we want to be together on every stage of pregnancy. We plan on getting pregnant soon after i get my visa though... But I just read something on www.whattoexpect.com (which is a GREAT place btw) that brought tears to my eyes:

If you've had breast reduction surgery, chances are good that you won’t be able to nurse exclusively, because the breast tissue that was removed contained milk glands and ducts. (If you’ve had breast augmentation, there’s also a small chance that you won’t be able to produce enough milk to supply your baby’s needs.)

I've had a reduction and it hurts to think that could happen to me!!

:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

I can't cry enough...... :(

awwww big Hugs!!!... if I were you I would call a lactation specialist and talk to them about your concerns... there may be something you can do to increase your chances of sucsessful nursing. In the mean time maybe do some more research and possible find a forum for support for mom's and mom's to be. Look on www.ivillage.com here is a quote from an article I found there. There is much more info there as well.. and here is the link to the article http://parenting.ivillage.com/newborn/nbre...0,,40v6,00.html

There are two basic types of breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty. In one, the nipple and areola remain attached, while excessbreast tissue is removed (pedicle technique.) In the other, which is most commonly used for very large breasts, both nipple and areola are completely removed, severing glands and nerve pathways (free-nipple technique.) If ducts and nerves remain intact, breastfeeding is possible. It is unlikely that breastfeeding will be successful if the areola and nipple have been completely removed and repositioned, as in the free-nipple technique.

In a 1992 study, "Is breastfeeding possible after reduction mammoplasty?" by Harris, Morris and Freiberg in Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, 68 patients were followed after reduction mammoplasty (pedicle technique). Twenty became pregnant and all produced milk. 13 (65 percent) decided not to breastfeed, and 7 (35 percent) breastfed successfully.

Even if milk ducts and nerves have been cut or damaged during surgery, it is impossible to know for sure if you are able to breastfeed until you try. If it is determined that your milk supply is insufficient, a nursing supplementer can be used while breastfeeding. This allows your baby to benefit from the closeness of nursing, while receiving the milk you are able to produce, along with necessary supplementation.

I would recommend working with a Lactation Consultant familiar with your particular situation. She will be able to help you in positioning your baby to best access your milk, to deal with problems of breast engorgement (that can be more common in women who have undergone breast surgery), and in evaluating your milk supply. To find a Lactation Consultant in your area, contact ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association) atilca@erols.com.

It is important that your baby's output be monitored in the first six weeks following the birth. Your baby should be having six to eight wet diapers and at least two good sized bowel movements each day. Weekly weight checks are also important during the first six weeks to be sure your baby is receiving the proper nutrition.

I didn't nurse with my first son...I wanted to go back to work right away, and to be honest I wasn't at all interested in nursing then.. when I had my daughter I was all prepared to nurse her and did for the first week than my doc noticed I had a staff infection on my c-section incision so of course I had to be on strong antibodics, which crossed through my breast milk ... and my daughter was allergic to it, so I was told to pump and dump, until I was done with antibodics and then go back to nursing her. unfortunatly that did not work out for me so I had to live with only nursing her for a week... the up side is she did get some of the much needed colostrum.

This time I plan on nursing at least the first 2 to 4 weeks until I start back to school after that we will see.

Hugs again Patricia

Just wanted to add that every one here who's pregnant should visit that web site (which is the What To Expect When You Are Expecting's website) because it really is amazing!

It helps you with all the lists and plans and all the other stuff parents-to-be should know. It is true that you have to subscribe to get the most out of it but the first month is free, so if you don't like the website and feel like you have already taken all the information you needed from there, then you can just cancel subscription.

I have already printed out pages and pages of stuff..... and I'm gonna use that website (and read the book) for sure when the time comes.

Good luck to you all!:star:

And hey.... I have a question. What kind of pain killer (if any) have you used (or will use)? Was it as good as you thought?

If this has been discussed before, just tell me so and I'll go look for it! ;)

This is my 1st so I can't help on the pain killer aspect, I'm leaning towards the epidural though.

I also have a question for the experienced mothers/expecting mothers out there. I went to my GP (Family Doctor) yesterday...everything's ok :). I told them I have an appointment booked to see an OB April 18th, and they said I should cancel that as they would be my OB and would be delivering the baby. They said they would have me get my scan/ultrasound done outside their clinic and have the results sent to them.

Does this sound strange? I thought you get an OB and they take over your care whilst you are pregnant and the GP/Family Doctor takes a back seat?

Yup, im using my gp as my obgyn too. It makes sense, to me anyway, instead of going to a brand new doctor and pretty much starting all over again. Ive gone to my doc since i was 16 so she knows me pretty well......

Goning to the doc today!! its at 2:30! im getting so anxious and excited!!!

I was talking with my husband last night about finding out the sex of the baby. I dont think he wanted to know, but i really do. so i tell him "i wont tell you if you dont want to know!" it doesnt even occur to suggest not finding out at all.....silly me. But i do really want to know, and he said that i might as well tell him, since he will just figure it out later when i start buying (gender specific) baby clothes!

I aint cool enough for a signature.....

I think I'm just nervous because I don't HAVE a regular Doctor here as such, and the one I went to is a young training Doctor in a practice that teaches OSU students. He just doesn't inspire me with confidence.

Am I just worrying too much? In one way, it's good I think cos he'll have to get everything checked by another Doctor, and plus the practice is associated with a good hospital here. But then, I just worry that I'm not doing things right for the baby...

And hey.... I have a question. What kind of pain killer (if any) have you used (or will use)? Was it as good as you thought?

If this has been discussed before, just tell me so and I'll go look for it! ;)

I already have 2 kids and I've done it both ways. With my first son I've had an epidural. It sucked. I never felt the urge to push, I felt like ####### immediately afterward and all I wanted to do was sleep. (I can only vouch for the first 3 hours after the birth because after that I hemmorraged and almost bled out).

With my second son, I had no drugs. There wasn't time, and I really didn't want them. I felt EVERYTHING. I felt him move down the birth canal (which was AWESOME to feel him move down it was like omg here he comes!) I felt the urge to push, which truely does make it easier to give birth. And afterwards, well because I didn't have drugs I was allowed to get up out of bed right away, go take a shower and felt fine the rest of the day. I felt like I could get up and go run a marathon, I felt that good. It made it much easier to relax and enjoy my baby.

We are planning on no drugs this time. However, I do understand that if the baby doesn't turn (he was breech at our last ultrasound) I'll have to have a c-section. It's my personal choice to do the no drugs thing. (And I'm a wimp when it comes to pain before you start thinking that I must be tough  I cry when I get a paper cut)

This is my 1st so I can't help on the pain killer aspect, I'm leaning towards the epidural though.

There are lots of GP's that will deliver the babies. the only problem with that is, if you have a problem with the pregnancy or become high risk you will likely be transfered to an obgyn with speciality in that area. If you have a problem during delivery you will have another doctor have to come in and help. But if you have no problems, then that's great! I'm too high risk to ever consider that. (Gestational diabetes with first son, toxemia with second son, 1 ectopic pregnancy that burst, and 1 miscarriage all before this pregnancy. And my blood pressure is rising again so I'm being watched again with this one for toxemia.)
