Wow, why America is so behind on maternity leave policies?

Not for the lack of money, I believe.

Lack of forward thinking, IMO. Its the same policy applied to group healthcare benefits and vacation/sick time. Most companies dont allow you to take more than 1 week off at a time in America. Before Ahmed got here, he just could not understand how any employer would limit their employees' vacation to anything less than a month. American companies seem to be more interested in short-term gain, rather than long-term goals. If they were more focused on the future, they'd put more effort into preventative measures. For example, my company pays for us to all have a free membership to Sam's Club, but hardly any of us use it. We've often suggested the same money could be used for a health club membership, which everyone would be much better off with.

Unfortunately, I dont think any of it will change. American companies are too deeply rooted in what they need/want right now, as opposed to how today's actions and plans will benefit the future.

I bet you'll start using that Sams Club membership when you have to buy diapers!

Touche

I agree, I think American companies are not really interested in loyal employees. If they did, they would try to retain them.

I think they're more interested in obtaining loyalty by fear and ignorance. Alot of people (myself included) have stayed with a crappy company with crappy (or no) benefits because they didnt think they could get (or deserve) better. I suppose it depends on what industry you're in, salary bracket, etc. But Im with you, I think the general policy sucks and we ought to get better maternity benefits.

And Yassmine...I couldn't agree more.

TY. After posting I thought "Boy I sure am being an opinionated hormonal b!tch." But its nice to know my sentiment is shared. It makes hormones more fun

Heyyyyy everyone :)

As of tonite I won't be logged on for a while - taking advantage of it being a two person household and spending lots of quality time with hubby (my first baby (L)) before baby boy makes his appearance. If I don't log in beforehand, I wish all of you a blessed holiday season.

Big hugs to all of you (F)

Best wishes for a speedy, easy, and safe delivery and a happy, healthy baby! Dont forget to post some pics upon your return. (F)
