Aww bless. I see your ticker and you must be in the throes of first trimester morning-noon-and night sickness. To read this you must be thinking "Will I ever eat normally again? Will I ever venture more than 3 feet from the can?" Poor thing. Wait a month or so and you'll be eating everything that's not tied down. LOL

I think it is so funny how food makes a pregnant woman soooo happy! And the opposite: when you don't get the food that you want...watch out! Beware of pregnant woman! lol

And how! When I have a craving, neither sleet nor snow nor inter-office mail shall stand in my way. I dont care what everyone else in the office is doing for lunch, I want Chinese delivery dangit, and someone else needs to order with me so I can make the $12 minimum! Nevermind! I can eat $12 worth of Chinese food on my own!

I had a doc appointment yesterday and the doctor gave me a copy of my last ultrasound report....

it said something like this "

The gestational sac sits somewhat low, almost adjacent to the lower uterine segment. with the past history of premature delivery, follow-up ultrasound at approx 18-20 weeks is suggested"...

I remember with my last pregnancy my doctor told me my placenta was low... I had no idea what that meant

Marilyn,

I had low lying placenta as well and it resolved by itself after a few weeks as my doc predicted. It is not that uncommon at the early stages of pregnancy and it usually "fix" itself when your uterus starts growing. I am sure it will be fine for you as well, although your doc might want to take extra precautions because of your history. Try not to worry too much about it if you can, it is really not that big of deal at the stage you're at. I found this online which actually explains better, I hope it helps. ;)

The placenta is also called the afterbirth. It is this that allows your baby to get all its oxygen and nutrients from you. Normally the placenta implants or buries itself into toward the middle or top of the womb. This means that it is well out of the way of the 'exit' when it comes to labour, and the baby has an easy passage out. When this doesn't happen, though, and an ultrasound scan reveals that the placenta has implanted in the lower part of the womb, you are said to have a 'low lying placenta'. This can potentially cause complications when it comes time to give birth.

How Common is This and How Often Does it Stay Low Lying?

A low-lying placenta is not an uncommon finding on second trimester ultrasound scan. As many as 15% to 20% (one in five to six) of pregnancies have a low lying placenta. Fortunately, only 5% (one in 20) of these remain low lying at 32 weeks and only one third of those are low lying at term (37 weeks). After 28 weeks, a low lying placenta is known as placenta praevia.

The vast majority of pregnant women will have their placenta issues resolved by the time labour starts and will not have any problems.

How Does the Placenta Move?

It doesn't actually 'move' but the growth of the womb and placenta relative to each other mean that it appears to do this.

The lower part of the womb - the lower segment - grows a great deal in mid to late pregnancy. After 28 weeks, its size increases by more than ten-fold. In addition, the placenta grows most toward the top of the womb, where the blood supply is best.

It is because of these two events that most women with a low lying placenta have no problems.

How Will I Know if it Has Moved or Not?

You will be asked to come back for another scan, probably around 32 weeks, by which time most women will be reassured that all is well and the placenta is now postioned toward the top of the womb.

What do I Need to do Now?

If you're placenta remains near the bottom of your uterus, then there is nothing you can do to try and encourage the placenta to move.

Unfortunately, because of the placenta's position over the cervix, there is an increased risk of early labour and bleeding. Very rarely the bleeding can be quite heavy.

If you notice any fresh blood or regular pains, it is important to contact your doctor or delivery suite right away. This is not something that is common.

That's good. Pain during labor will be enough, you don't need it before that. I didn't have any pain until the very late stages of the 3rd trimester (week 39/40) when my braxton hicks contractions would get so painful that I couldn't stand up anymore.

every woman and every pregnancy is different and a DVD is only going to list for you whats more common or less common, etc. there really isnt a list of things that 'SHOULD' happen...

With my first baby I really had no braxton hicks at all. zip nada nothing. This time I have them all the time, like Eveline says sometimes I cant stand up straight. So I wouldnt take the lack of pains to mean anything at all except for her to enjoy it now because at some point the pains WILL come..... :)

Hi Tracey,

I wasn't going to let you in on this one until your first trimester sickness eased up! I'm so sorry to hear you are still feeling ill. have you spoken with your OB? It is completely normal, unfortunately, but it helped me a lot to get the reassurance from the doc. My first incling about third trimester sickness was when my first rrimester sickness let up. I was talking to a coworker and she asked how I was feeling it was at about 16 weeks and I said great! I think the worst is over! She smiled and said, you hope! I walked away thinking what is that supposed to mean. Well, at about 27 weeks it started again. I have to say honestly it wasn't as bad as the first but I was so depressed to find out that it was common and I was just going to have to ride it out. I'm at 34 weeks now and have had two good days in a row! I have really learned to take pleasure in these very simple things! Hang in there and PLEASE feel free to call or write if you have any questions or concerns, I love to be supportive in any way I can!

Heather

I wasn't sick in the beginning and I wasn't in the end. I guess I had the perfect pregnancy with no problems at all and one big belly to show...Well, it got me at birth but that doesn't count
