I am seriously considering cloth diapers...anyone else? I have been doing some research and it looks like I could handle it and it would save us a ton of money. What do you think? I am thinking about using prefolds with covers and then having some all-in-ons for people that can't handle prefolds. I will still use disposables on trips and stuff. Am I nuts?

We have been doing cloth since day one but we're using sposies when we go out into town or on trips. If you have a good diaper pail, you won't smell anything. I have a regular plastic box and in the beginning, baby's poop don't stink (if you breastfeed)...later it does start to stink and you really need a tight fitting lid. I prefer cloth, Adam seems to feel more comfy in them anyway.

I'm using regular prefolded diapers that you can get at WALMART and I ordered covers at www.babybestbuy.com (the cheap ones for 3 bucks a pair). I just found some covers at WALMART too but I think they start at 12 months or so. I wash about every three days.

Autumnchick: Congratulations on your pregnancy

Marilyn: Congrats to you too...you are in my thoughts and I'm wishing you all the best.

Hey, does anyone know this?

Can you fly in 8th month of pregnancy? My wife is 7th months pregnant now and by the time her VISA comes through and she is ready to fly she will be in her 8th month. She will be flying from India to US via a Non Stop flight which is about 15 hours.

What do you think?

I think most airlines will not allow a woman to fly if she is within 30 days of her due date.

Is there any way you can be in India for the birth of your baby? I am sure you want to be present but speaking from my own experience it can be difficult to find a new doctor late in a pregnancy. When I had my son a few years ago I moved just to a different state in my 7th month and I had a lot of trouble finding a doctor who wanted to take me as a patient that far along. I think its because OB/GYNs have such huge malpractice problems that no one wanted to take someone in that they didnt know the history of prenatal care even though my records were available. In any case it took many many phone calls and finally some intervention from a friend of a friend who worked in a local hospital before I finally had someone accept me as a patient.

So I am not sure if its like this for everyone but I know I had a couple of real nervewracking weeks trying to sort it out and I vowed never to move late in pregnancy again if I could possibly help it......

As far as I know you can travel via airplane up to your 36th week as long as your doc gives your the thumps up and you have a low risk pregnancy. I would check with airlines until when they take pregnant ladies (every airline is differnet).

Then, make sure your insurance doesn't see the pregnancy as a preexisting condition, otherwise you have to fully pay everything and it is expensive. You'd have to get married immediately and don't forget that babies are full term from week 37 on (which is early 9 months). I would suggest she'll have the baby in India, get a passport for him/her and then travel or maybe you can speed up things at the consulate if she talkes to them.

I am assuming you meant not a low risk pregnancy. :)

Hmm, I have my insurance already, when she gets there, can't I just add her to my insurance as my wife? Would they consider it a preexisting condition?

We are married, we got married on Jan 3rd.

Well if she can't travel to the US because her VISA doesn't get done in time then that is what we are going to do and have the baby in India. BTW we are going to the embassy in just 1 hour to find out what can be done because of her pregnancy. Both the I130 and I129F are approved in the US, we are just waiting for them to get to the embassy. Hopefully this month.

Thanks for your reply all. Anyone else with other opinions on 8th month pregnancy risk of flying? The reason I ask is because I heard that baby is in danger if born in the 8th month and the chance of survival is much less then if the baby was born in the 9th month or even 7th month...

I think the 8th month thing is more of a wife tale than anything else(just my opinion, if it is actually true someone will definitely correct me)...I actually have a few friends who had babies who were a month early and they were all perfectly fine, didn't even need to be in the NICU and went home just like the full term babies did.

About flying...what Eveline told you is correct, general rule is usually 36 weeks although you need to check with the specific airline you guys intend to use to fly her to the States, I was told some of them might allow up to 38, but not sure for overseas trips it might be just for domestic. At least that's what they told me when I was pregnant. I do believe Eveline meant low risk pregnancies only, a high risk pregnancy is by definition not the ideal condition to travel...let alone fly overseas. Personally and honestly I wouldn't feel comfortable flying all those hours by myself being 8 month pregnant..but that's just me, of course you guys are the only ones who can make the decision by weighing risks and benefits.

Good luck.

To all the new/old moms and moms to be: congrats!

What do you think?

From a personal standpoint, I would not want to make that long of a trip while so far along in pregnancy.

Here's some info from a website:

International flights or flights longer then 4 to 5 hours entail you being in the air for a fairly long period of time (long enough to give birth). Various airlines have their own policies and guidelines about restricting the acceptance of pregnant women passengers. This usually relates to how advanced your pregnancy is. Some airlines only take women up until about 26 weeks of pregnancy, while others are happy to take women until 36 weeks. Although this may be less if it is a multiple pregnancy, depending on the airline. Some airlines are open to negotiation in special circumstances, but will usually require a medical certificate.

A few airlines require a letter from your caregiver stating when your baby is due and possibly your physical fitness to fly. This may also depend on how far pregnant you are at the time of flying.

http://www.birth.com.au/class.asp?class=6720&page=1

So you'll need to contact the airline.

There is also the issue of the insurance and trying to find a Dr in the last month of pregnancy. You should call your insurance right away and ask them about this. If they won't cover it, it's better if she has the baby in India since the cost will be much much less.

As for early delivery, a good friend of mine delivered at 33 weeks(about 7 months), and the baby was in the NICU for a couple weeks but was fine and is now a healthy one year old. These days with technology here, babies born early can do fine.

Hope everything works out!

I agree with everybody.

I don't believe insurance companies have a right to consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition. This is what I read in my pregnancy book. But of course it is better to be safe than sorry and call them directly. You never know. Finding a doctor can be a problem too and she needs a doctor right sway.

agreed.. that's why my wife is still using my insurance even though she has her school one.. it's stupid that state insurance would cover less than a private one.. mine does cover her pregnancy, hers treats it as that stupid 'pre-existing condition'...

btw.. we still waiting... Nov 4 supposedly is the due date.. but dang, he's taking too longgg, I wanna see my kid!

@JasS...no, I mean a low risk pregnancy, meaning a low risk of problems or pre eclampsia, preterm labor etc.

A baby's chances to survive increase every week starting at week 23. So, a baby born at 8 months has a good chance of survival although boys are usually slower when it comes to lung developement. http://www.meriter.com/living/preemie/surv...ew/survival.htm

Hey guys :) Quick question from a newly pregnant chick .... please tell me some good strategies to deal with morning sickness. The first couple weeks of it, I was able to manage by eating frequently and usually munching on saltines or something during work. Since Thursday, I have been nauseous constantly (there has not been a moment when I didn't feel queasy). I've been reading the pregnancy books I bought and have gone online and tried a bunch of things, but nothing is working. I really need something to manage through the work day. I'm a psychotherapist and it is dang hard to try to do therapy when all I want to do is curl up in a ball!!! LOL

I've called my doc, but he was not there today :(

Nothing really helped me either when I felt nauseas. I'd mostly end up throwing up in the mornings and after lunch would feel better. It was just mornings usually for me,and it lasted til 16 weeks. I tried lots of things. But most of it didn't help. What made me feel good was mint gum or Sierra Mist soda. But they weren't always guarantees.

One thing that might have helped a little is eating something with protein before bed, and waking up in the middle of the night or early morning and drinking a glass of milk or having some other protein quickly. Low blood sugar can trigger the nausea so keeping it level could possibly help. I still get nauseas if I get too hungry so I am pretty sure it has a lot to do with getting low blood sugar for me.

But if it's bad all day, I think there are meds your Dr can prescribe for you.

I was prescribed Zofran and Phenergan for the nausea, but they didn't help. So far, I have not found any one thing that truly relieves my nausea. But for me, if I get hungry, the nausea gets much worse. So I try to eat something every couple of hours.

Wish I had more helpful information, autumnchik. I'm still praying everyday for some relief :help:
