Quick question. Are any of you vegetarians?

Anyway, I was just wondering about this. Anyone have any specific tips on diet etc. if the mother is a vegetarian?

Oh and congratulations to everyone. The baby-talk is cute. :star:

Hi all!

Just found out we're expecting...as you can see, it's very early days yet! But I did find a site called BabyFit which is good for tracking meals, vitamins etc. Here's a link to it HERE if you want to have a look.

And glad to be on board with you all :)

Amanda

Thanks for the link! Was just what I was looking for.

Did you mean lacto-vegetarian or vegan.

For vegans, there are oodles of herbal multivitamins and (the all-important) folate-iron supplements--many of which are sugar- and gelatin-free. (If you can stand the taste), tofu would probably be a good protein source--but there are also soy-based protein powders (as well, pulses and legumes are usually good sources of protein anyway).

Lacto-vegetarians can get some of the requirements (protein, calcium) through dairy products, but should still take multivitamins and iron-folate supplements.

I've been taking multi-vitamins for the past decade or so. I've needed an iron boost since moving to the US though (The vegetarian alternatives are sort of limited where we live when dining out and I really don't have time too cook every day). I'm a lacto-vegetarian but rarely drink milk or eat eggs. I guess the thing I'm worried about is the fact that I don't like most of the vegetarian alternatives either, like meat substitutes. I just don't like things that look like meat and feel like meat, as in the consistency of those products. Blech :P I'm very picky I guess. But anyhow, thanks everyone!

Another question: I'm currently using the Centrum multivitamin thingies, what does everyone else use?

Flinstones vitamins all the way...... :P

I have a hard time remembering regular vitamins, and chewables are just so much easier to take!

I aint cool enough for a signature.....

You realise you need to take a multiple dosage (I've seen the directions on Nutrilite chewables, where for adult it is double child's dose) which can run you extra $$.

I know im supposed to double dose and that adds some expense......but thats just something that works better for me right now. If when i do go to the doctor (which i can now cause im on medicaid :P ), and she says that i should be taking real prenatal vitamins and prescribes them to me (which would be covered now that im on medicaid :P ) I will force myself to remember to take them...especially if the doc makes me, which she probably will, since shes the doc!

I aint cool enough for a signature.....

Actually, if you're on good (or excellent) vitamins the doc will not be bothered (so long as you don't come out and tell her that you didn't touch her prenates).

Check this out... it tells about things you should and should NOT do when pregnant...

http://www.bygpub.com/natural/pregnancy.htm

it says you should avoid hot dogs... and I have been craving chili dogs latley... grrrr :crying:

Patricia

Lol, I love how it says you should avoid herpes...well obviously, I don't know of many people that would actively seek it!

 now I have to go look just cuz it says that.

I take the prenatal vitamins that my doctor gave me. I forget what they are called, but they have a stool softener in them so that the iron does not constipate you. I take it every night before bed, and it doesn't bother me at all. (most prenatals make me sick)

Could any one give me a rough estimate on what to expect in bills? We have Anthem PPO and I'm finding it hard to get an approximate total. Is it a really scary number?

Having a baby in Ireland is practically free...you go to your GP, he confirms that you're pregnant, sends off info to the Health Board and hospitals that you are pregnant...and your costs are covered, no matter what you earn.

So as you can imagine, I'm waiting for the shock of my life!! Give it to me...I can take it, I swear :help:

First of all Congrats!!!!!!

Depends on what your deductable, out of pocket, and co-pay is... insurnace companies are different... your best bet is to call the insurance company and find out what your out of pocket is... and if you won't deliver the baby this year, sometimes at the begining of the year it starts all over again with deductables and out of pocket.

Also find out from your Dr. what they charge for prenatal care and delivery, and what the hospital charges for a delivery.

Really we can't give you what you will pay you will need to do some research... sorry I coudn't help to ease your mind!
