Heads up, please secure the baby's crib rail very well when he/she is a little older (able to stand up while holding something). My little one learned to climb out the crib last weekend, and fell. He scratched his face enough to start bleeding. We couldn't put a band-aid on the scrape because he would just pick it off and eat it. Oh well, I have raised and resecured the crib rail and tested it by putting all of my body weight on it--I hope he has learned his lesson, but aleast I know the crib rail is a bit taller and stronger--though he does seem to want to climb out still.

Also with the recent Fisher-Price/Mattel/Tommy-the-Train lead paint scare for made in china products I have decided to purchase a home lead test kit. As a look at all of my son's toys reveals both Made in China or other Asian country and Fisher Price/Mattel as the place and name of manufacturer.

I am 12 weeks today! Yippee! Only a few more and I will be into the 2nd trimester. Starting to lose my waist, but lovin' it!

Question? Is a bumper in the crib really necessary? Those sets are SOOO expensive. I am thinking of buying just sheets and a dust ruffle and not doing one of those fancy themed sets. What do you think?

Have a look on Ebay, you will probably find them MUCH cheaper there!!

I doubt very much a crib bumper is a neccessity though.....

I am not doing a fancy themed set either. There are cute sheets and blankets that are sold separately for a lot cheaper than having to buy it all together. Also you can get bumpers for like $10 at some places. Ikea has some inexpensive but cute baby bedding I want to check out eventually.

Congrats on hitting 12 weeks! :)

GET A BREATHABLE BUMPER, they sell them at Walmart. I know they are not very cheap at about 20 Dollars but Adam started to roll around in his bed an always landed with his nose in the bumper. It scared the heck out of me because I was scared he would suffocate himself. I took the bumper out and his feet and hands would get stuck in the crib all the time and now with the breathable bumper he sleeps just fine and it looks good.

@Nizzy: Thank you. I think - but doesn't every mom think that - that my baby is the cutest thing in the world and absolutely perfect. I can't stop looking at him and kiss him all the time. He is such a happy baby...

@Jackson1975. You baby is so cute. We were due around the same time. But I am still pregnant. I don't think my baby will last until August 25th.

@Anne Wow, Congratulations on the new baby. I know it won't be easy, but your son will have a playmate which is always nice. They can entertain themselves. You are not the first person I have heard about getting pregnant after their first. Take care Anne.

August 25 is my husbands birthday. I never thought adam would actually make it to his due date. I figured he would be early and then....one week late and that only because of the induction. He would have gone probably longer than only one week. You never know. All the best though. You are almost there. Are there any signs yet that labor might start soon?

cindi, i am so sorry :(

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i bought a crib bumper set, washed it and got the crib ready when i was a few months pregnant... then i found out about this:
Which Groups Have Recommended Against Bumper Pads?
Some major children's safety organizations have recently suggested that parents and child care providers should remove crib bumper pads from baby cribs. The groups include: American Academy of Pediatrics, Health Canada, National Center for Health and Safety in Child Care, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the First Candle/National SIDS Alliance. Some state and regional Back to Sleep campaigns now recommend removing bumper pads, as well.
Why Do These Groups Recommend Against Crib Bumper Pads?
One reason child safety organizations recommend against crib bumpers is that they pose a risk of suffocation. Just like a pillow or thick blanket, crib bumper pads can restrict a baby's breathing if the bumper is up next to the baby's nose or mouth. Suffocation risk is greatest when babies are very young and unable to move themselves away from potential hazards.
Rebreathing of air is another concern with crib bumper pads. The bumper reduces the flow of fresh air around baby during sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that some infants, when they are overheated or lack sufficient oxygen during sleep, are unable to arouse themselves enough to prevent hypoxia and death. The AAP states that re-breathing of air may in fact be a contributing factor to SIDS.
Solutions
Since many infant safety organizations now recommend that nothing be inside the crib at all, the safest route for parents and babies would be to remove crib bumper pads altogether. For day care centers, the push for increased sleep safety may soon result in states mandating that child care providers no longer use crib bumper pads. For parents who are still concerned about their child sticking arms and legs through the crib slats, and feel that they must use a bumper pad, there are new mesh crib bumpers on the market today that allow more air to flow through the crib.
I am 2 cm dilated at my last appointment on Monday. I have been having those braxton-hicks contractions more but they are just practice. :)
My blood pressure has been elevated since about 34 weeks. So, my doctor may induce next week. I'll find out this Monday. I'll keep you posted.
Oh no Shayrene. I hope you won't get induced and if you are..then I hope you'll have a good birth experience anyway. I had BH contractions from the 23rd week on and they got so painful in the end that I had to sit down with every contraction and there were a LOT but not enough to actually dilate anything, unfortunately. I'm excited for you. You'll be a mommy soon.
