What's wrong with California?

Hi there,

I was wondering what's wrong in California. I think it's really bad when I read the processing times and the timelines here. It can't be real waiting longer than 4 or 5 months for NOA2.

I know I should be patient, because my journey just started, but it's hard, especially when your case was transferred from Nebraska to Cali.

What IS wrong with California? That is the million dollar question. And we all feel for you because we are in the same situation. It's hard to watch Vermont move so much faster than CA but there is no good explanation for why it's like this - Vermont is managed much better apparently and maybe they process fewer applications.

Anyway, it's a good idea to plan on 6 months realistically from beginning to end. That's because CA is SLOW and because there are all kinds of things that CAN delay the processing. Like IMBRA did. Or if you forgot to send something and they send a request for evidence or you have a name hit or end up in administrative review. So good luck and try to stay patient - I know it's hard. I've been waiting since March 23 and I see no end in sight.

Unfortunately this process, if it teaches you nothing else, will teach a great lesson in patience!

As has already been said you really have to look at things realistically and plan on at least 6 months wait to receive your petition approval, then of course the next step means more waiting with the petition making its way through NVC to your consulate where final processing etc takes place. Depending upon the consulate involved this can of course take a long time in itself.

I come from a supposed "easy" country (UK) and still the whole process from start to finish for us with no RFE's or hiccups of any kind took 8 months. When we applied for the K1 almost everyone going through Cali was taking between 6-9 months just to get the petition approved through the first stage so in point of fact things have improved some... in a relative sense!

I see from your timeline you really have only been waiting for about 3 weeks so the only thing anyone can tell you is to keep yourself busy preparing what you need, both in a practical sense and emotionally too - there is a wait - there is nothing you can do about it - and when all said and done it could be a lot worse.

What I heard is that USCIS decided to no longer process petitions in Nebraska, and they transferred all they had to CA. This was done to make the process faster in the long run, but in the short run the folks that were transferred are in for a longer-than-usual process.

not 100% sure, but it's the reason i was given.

My understanding that it was both I-130s and I-129Fs that were forwarded from Neb and Tex to Ca. Supposed to make CSC the experts on those thus speeding up the process. CSC transferred their work visas and some other types to texas and Neb. Like you said will help speed the process in the future but for those of us now in the que, all it is doing is lengthening the delays.

We should say that some thing is really wrong with CSC. California is very nice state, and I love it.

The waiting is painful and costs. Let's consider how much costs only for the checking internet. I would say at lest half an hour each day checking emails, status, searching on VJ and so on, 4 months waiting, $100/hour, so it costs $6,000 for each person.

all I have to say is bad timing to change the work process. normally you wait till everything is smooth and then throwing a wrench in it. Don't throw the whole toolbox in!
