SSN before getting married

gtigiant,

I wouldn't be surprised, if push comes to shove, if the quoted requirement is not. Go down and have a talk with them, and if necessary ask them show you the statute that requires a SSN to get a marriage license.

HELP! I just read this thread and I looked at the County Website I am in and it states that
Both parties are required to be present at the time of making the application for the marriage license. If either, or both applicants are physically incapacitated, their physician must complete and affidavit as to the physical disability, and this affidavit shall be filed with the application for the marriage license.

Each applicant must provide a social security number.

So this puts the wedding off by a month? That is could be extremely difficult. Any ideas?

It can usually be waived in the case where you are not yet a resident of the U.S. Don't despair and don't necessarly accept what the counter clerk says...they aren't always versed on exceptions.

I'm glad you guys found out you don't need an SSN to get married, but I'm curious as to what is the big rush?! What if you did have to wait a month or more? We are, but we are also planning a full blown wedding with 25 guests at a very nice beach side restaurant.

Some info we found out which MIGHT be of some help to others:

In NC, the local registrar of deeds (apprently thats the fancy title! lol) said that if someone has no SSN, but wishes to marry (and providing they have proof of birth date and identity) all they need to do is sign a declaration (sworn oath type thing) at the time of application for license that they have not been issued an SSN, or were never issued one, and that will satisfy them.

It seemed a little involved to me, but if that's a way around it then that's what we'll do.

the reason is that we are having a non-binding religious ceremony in Peru before she comes to the US, non-binding in the sense that it is not the legal civil ceremony. part of the arrangement for this ceremony is that we have the civil in the US within a few days of entering the US. ;) hope that makes a little bit of sense.

Okay... sort of! :) We also had a ceremony in Thailand with her family and a few friends, but it was not a legal ceremony. We are having a traditional Hawaiian wedding here, which took a lot of planning and arranging, so that's why it is taking so long!
