U can get a "letter" from SSA showing that a number was assigned. The employer will still need to see the actual card but the letter will show that you do have a number and have requested the card.

If you checked off on the DS-230 that you wanted to be assigned an SSN you need to allow at least 3 weeks after you arrive to receive the card. If you don't receive it within 3 weeks you need to go into a SSA office to see if you were assign an SSN and if necessary submit an application. If you go into an SSA office before 3 weeks most will tell you to come back later. If one would happen to allow you to submit an application before 3 weeks, there is always the possibility that you could wind up being assigned 2 SSNs.

Not a letter, It's call an SSN Verification Printout. It just says XXX-XX-XXXX is assigned to Your Name Goes Here. Not a replacement for an SSN card, but better than nothing until you receive the actual card. If you have been assigned an SSN ask for it at any SSA office. Just need to show ID, i.e., passport or driver's license to get one
