I agree. even though we will hear some reports on Monday after phone office opens up ... I think (based on number of people) it should be safe to come for fingerprinting anyways. since they take walk-ins (never tried on different date) it should be no problem regardless of those mysterious notices.

Thank you everyone for your responses! We will definitely be calling to try to get more info, my husband is thinking about scheduling an INFOPass appointment as well.

We are wondering if there is a system upgrade happening to start utilizing the biometric information stored in some country's passports. My husband is from the UK, and their passport has biometric info stored on a chip within the passport.

If anyone has more information after calling, please post any update you receive, we'll do the same!

Thanks again,

lhamilt

This is odd indeed - the 8th is a Wednesday - can't imagine something going on all across the country - maybe they're planning some sort of system update.

As recommended above - I would call - and/or go to the ASC maybe Mon/Tue (since most ASC's accept walk-ins). Obviously they aren't canceling the need for biometrics so may as well try and get it out of the way.

Be interested in hearing reports from those who have called the 800#.

I just called. I got the same notice, on a Saturday and freaked out. After several minutes with the automated guy, trying to discern the trick to speaking to a human (it's to ask for forms to be sent to you btw), I got through to an operator.

I explained the situation, which is. I filed my application, and got a notice of receipt. Then, about a week later, I got a notice that said "Appointment cancelled, no need to appear at ASC". Below it read, please appear at the ASC office on August something, at 8am.... He said it was a cancellation for the original notice. I said, this IS the original notice. I asked if there was anyway to see WHY the appointment had been cancelled, and there is wasn't. He just said I should sit tight and wait for rescheduling.

I (on my own) have concluded the scheduling notice for my cancelled appointment is probably en route. I think I may try and "show up" like other people seem to be planning on. I also agree with those who said that the operators are either uniformed or uninterested.

What is the August date? Since they seem to be canceling July 7/8/9 dates, do you think the August date is your reschedule date?

i was also able to call the customer service and inquired about the cancellation notice i receivied ( my biometrics schedule is july 8, 2009 )..they said that it is a cancellation notice of the original schedule for biometrics and it doesn't mean that i don't need to have my biometrics at all anymore...i should be expecting another notice within the next 30 DAYS for my rescheduled appointment. the worst part of this all is that becuase of this rescheduling, it will delay the processing of our papers!

should i take her word for it or should i still go on the 8th just to be sure?! what do you guys think?!

Ok, I just got off the phone with USCIS and got put onto someone who has been dealing with this problem all morning. She said that my appointment for July 9th was cancelled (gave no reason) and I would get a new notice in the mail soon with a NEW appointment. I asked if I could just "walk-in" and they said NO, that I have to wait to get a new appointment date. I also asked if it was anything personal to my case and she said no. So I guess just more waiting.

If anyone gets a different response to me, I would love to hear it!!!

I can just recommend to do a walk-in. When I went to the office in St. Paul, MN it was pretty empty and they had time for me right away. But I`m sure that they are officially not alowed to say that walk-ins are ok.

It`s still really funny that there are so many cancellations for such a specific date.

my husband called the 800 number, here's his recap:

I called the USCIS line and explained the exact wording on the form, after a few minutes wait I was told that there could be several reasons such as training, severe weather or power outage and allow 30 days for a re-schedule letter, and that InfoPass is not where they do the biometrics.

Nonetheless, I proceeded to book an Infopass appointment for this Thursday 2nd July which as I correctly assumed is at the same address as per the original biometrics appointment. My aim is to simply request to do the biometrics on Thursday due to the cancellation letter and non receipt of any new information.

will let you all know what he discovers on thursday!
