We use the Pur 2 stage faucet water filter. We've used it for about 3 years now and like it. The filters seem to last a reasonable period of time - the cheapest source I've found for replacements is Brandsmart. During the summer the water here gets a strong chlorine taste that is noticeable even in tea or coffee. The filter definitely removes that 'taste'.

Oh...I bought the Brita pitcher with the filter in it and I just couldn't stand the taste of the water. Our tap water is horrible to begin with.

Have you looked into renting an under the sink, reverse osmosis filter? I used to rent one from Culligan and the water tasted good.

i dont know anything about water filters thats why i asked you guys...i was just thinking of getting one, but not 100% sure how will that work, or how "purified" the water would be....

i was thinking first of buying a water dispenser and the 5 gallon water thing, but i read some pretty bad reviews about them, so thats why i was starting to look into faucet water filters.

The water in my town tastes like rusty pool water out of the tap. Seriously yuck. The bath tub fills up yellow because of the high iron content and some days you can smell the chlorine before you even touch the water.

The water out of my Brita pitcher tastes and smells clean. I use it for everything from tea/coffee water to cooking. Zero complaints. Just make sure you clean it because the crevices inside will build up bacteria and mold/mildew.

RO (reverse osmosis) systems are nice.... but expensive and not without their problems. Mine back in Texas somehow ended up polluting our water with bacteria. Somehow the system got contaminated and I have no idea how (you can't pull the thing about to "clean" it like a pitcher). I was using it to put water in my saltwater aquarium (you have to use RO water or something similar that never had chlorine) and it killed everything in our tank slowly by the bacteria it added. NOT fun when saltwater creatures cost $20, 30, 50... each.

Living in the city, installed a water softener with two carbon filters to get rid of that terrible chlorine odor and taste. Seems pretty good, if I had plastic bottles, could sell it.

Wasn't true in the country with a 240 deep granite well, didn't do anything with that water, typical well in that neck of the woods was 40 deep, but if you go down, that is where the pure fresh water is hidden.

In my son's neck of the woods, he wanted a water sprinkler system, so with a hammer, we went down 23 feet with a point driven well, installed a 2 HP pump and actually getting 20 gallons per minute. But our DNR still insisted his well be certified and potable even though only grass is drinking that water. It passed with flying colors, so we tasted it, hey, ten times better than what the city is supplying! But he is not permitted to use that water in his home supply, they maintain the right to cream him with extremely high water bills.

In my city, if I even think about drilling a well, even for water sprinkling, they would toss me in jail and throw away the key. The key problem with many city water systems is the use of leaded and rusty pipes, so while the water may be good when they get it, goes to hell when piped to your home. It's because of this, they drive the ph level up to 8.6, but that really limes up everything, a real b!tch to clean, plus it clogs up your faucets that makes them drip to further run up your water bill. So had to add that softener to bring it back down to 7.0 and the carbon filters for the chlorine, but an added expense.

Took awhile for my wife and daughter to get use to drinking water out of the tap, they had to boil any drinking water first. And in my trips down there, their water tastes like #######. Then I learned she had two 80 gallon tanks installed with a pump, because they go through long periods where they only turn on the water for two hours a day.

On our last visit to her condo, found water dripping all over the place, only thing I could find to work with was a rusty pair of vise-grips, good thing I took that Charles Atlas muscle building course. Had to replace a union, paid twenty bucks for that, can get that here for a couple of bucks. Made me appreciate living here, tend to take water for granted. Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink, we cannot survive without water. Water in Venezuela is for more expensive than gasoline, but did you ever try to drink gasoline?

One thing we do have in common with Venezuela, they get you one way or the other.

That is strange because I'm thinking that bacteria can't thrive without some other contaminant in the water. The under the sink system I rented from Culligan required no maintenance beyond replacing the filter which they handled. Culligan has been around a long time and I always had good experiences with them.

Gabby,

I just found this. This seems pretty reasonably priced for an under the sink filter:

culligan-us-ez-1.jpg

$44.99

replacement filters run about $15
