I actually read something awhile ago about people visiting the UK just to get free treatment. Let me see if i can find it.

I was hospitalized there on a vacation afew years back. Got treatment, got a bill for the treatment and the private room-and that was OK with me. I saw the state of the wards, the few harrassed over worked nurses, plus the hospital I was in didn't have a speacialist for me and had to ship one in ( and that was expensive)--so I didn't mind one bit getting a bill......... Plus I didn't want the people living in the UK and contributing to the NHS to be paying for my treatment-that didn't seem right.

I must admit I've actually considered doing that Amby. I did think for a while that if I needed to have surgery again I might just go to London and do it! I have a doctor already there and they even have all of my patient history. I still have a bank account in London so getting a proof of address would be no problem. Paying a plane ticket to London would be cheaper than paying out for my surgery in the US.

I agree with you. I wouldn't mind getting the bill either. It just doesn't seem right for them to pay for your treatment. :thumbs:

Really? You think it will happen? i think it might be too early to tell.

i think LPRs should be covered as it will not be a free public plan, but something you can opt to purchase. Agree w/ Big Dog that work visa holders should be covered by employers, but in any event if you can afford to purchase the public plan and you are paying US taxes, you should have access to it.

Unfortunately, have no idea about illegals...

I agree with you. I wouldn't mind getting the bill either. It just doesn't seem right for them to pay for your treatment. :thumbs:

Yeh-I mean how much of a hypocrit can one be?......Sit here in the US and complain about having to 'cover' people for care that haven't paid into it-and then jetting off to the UK-costing their system tens of thousands- and leaving them to pay the tab.

If an illegal immigrant has an untreated contagious disease, that disease can spread to USCs as well. It is in the public health interest to provide that level of care to everyone. Illegals don't need maintenance medication or Viagra on public money but they do need some level of care, not for their sake but for ours. As for the fact that they're illegal, talk to ICE. They're not doing their job.

We're going to need a tiered system of benefits. Not everyone should be eligible for everything.

Well, look at it this way-legal immigrants go through all kinds of tests, etc for communicable diseases.....Whilst they are opffering amnesty to illegals they should be tested like the legals are.

About the bill-it kind of would make me feel better if someone other than the US taxpayer was footing the bill. Can't help it-it just would.....
