 who is that?

Steve - I am surprised you do not know! That is the great Irishman Phill Lynott, lead singer of Thin Lizzy (celebrated in statue outside Bruxelles in Dublin)

Oh man...I know of the guy but I had no idea about his name. So he was Irish? :P

He was - father was half-African (can't remember where)/half Brazilian, mother was Irish, born in England but eventually went to go live with gran in Ireland.

Interesting. :) I remember watching them perform, "The Boys are Back in Town" on one those 70's entertainment shows.

Most of the plastic paddy stuff is pretty annoying though, since Irish-Americaness is pretty unrecognizable in real Ireland.

SO true! My husband gets SO annoyed when he hears about leprechauns and corned beef and cabbage instead of bacon and cabbage! (Maybe just a Cleveland thing? I dunno...)

No, it true. All of America has corned beed and cabbage, and a watery green drink they call beer, served only on Saint Patricks.

Oh yes, the green beer too, ha!

Ugh, it ruins one of the most fabulous meals. Bacon and Cabbage is lovely...

LOL, I think the point here was that we get annoyed with people claiming their descent just to create conversation with a person born in that country. That's it. They think they have a common connection with said stranger, when, in fact, the stranger in question probably doesn't care about their granny that came over on the boat. There's nothing wrong with claiming your heritage, no matter how far removed, I have no problem with that. We just don't need to hear it from every other person we talk to.

It's probably comparable to when somebody asks me if I know Mickey Mouse when I tell them where I live. Now that really gets on my nerves because Mickey and I had a falling out several years ago and we haven't spoken to each other since.
