Boredom can depend a lot on where you live. Most Americans live out in suburbia and that type of place can get very boring without a job and social obligations lined up because there is literally nothing to do other than shop and go to Starbucks. I feel this way everytime I spend more than a couple of days at my parent's or sister's place.

If you have a Driver's License and access to a car, I found going out for a drive into the surrounding communities and becoming familiar with the back roads helped a lot with the boredom. I was able to find my way around and become familiar with the smaller towns and communities in the vicinity. I visited local State parks, museums, heritage houses - and I even went to movies on my own. You're right - there is only so much housekeeping and gardening one can do. Try and take this time to 'discover' your new home. I now know this area better than my husband does.

I still havent found a job yet.. And money is pretty tight right because our student loans repayments are kicking in. Therefore I had to give up my favorite hobby which is shoe shopping. So, here are somethings that I do to alleviate my boredom:

1) Found the closest library and got a library card. It is free unless you decide to let your dog chew up the books or use them as a coaster.

2) My mother-in-law is a nurse and has weird shifts. So everytime she gets a day off during the week, I go over and learn to cook my husband's favorite dishes. He now claims that I cook exactly like his mom.

3) I am using Rosetta Stone to lean Spanish.

4) I am thinking of joining YMCA and joing some exercise classes.

I am sure that there are plenty of other things to do. You can always find the closet animal shelter and volunteer there. If you are a religious person, you can join your church and volunteer your services there. You can also check out www.meetup.com and join local groups according to your interest.

I'm also from England and not allowed to work at the moment so I have an idea how you feel...I'm sure its been suggested before but I'll say it again: volunteer. That will take a chunk out of your your week. If you have an ID card, try enrolling on some courses or/and taking driving lessons. Apart from that, try to get out and about to explore the area where you live. I know staying at home, cooking and cleaning is not enough stimulation and can lead to boredom.

Good luck!

I still have no work but these are the things I do and I don't get reaaly bored. I was also working full time before I came here and I've been here to the US a few times before my CR1 visa was approved so there are not much places for me to explore anymore. I've gone even to VT and other closer states from where we live.

1. I just discovered that I can reply to VJ queries. There are lots of those who are still in the visa process & who are confused and lost with what they would do. It's actually like volunteering. You give from what you know & what you've experienced in the past, too, so it won't take that much effort at all.

2. I write a review of all the hotels & inns, and places, and restaurants I have been. This one takles a lot of time to do, esp, if you do not like the service provided in th eplace where you went. I still have lots of reviews to make. I wonder if I could finish them.

3. I plan for our next activity. For the past 2 weeks, I have been planning for our camping. I have been doing this in the past (searching for hotels, comparing prices, facilities, attractionds, etc) and it takes lots of time, too. Today, we can't make it to camp because I failed to call the campsites for reservations. SInce, it is 4th of JHuly, my husband doesn't want us to simply walk in & wish that there'd be space for us. I did this when we went to VT and he was so annoyed with me for being unprepared.

4. I try new dishes, from our local cuisine to chinese to mexican, etc.

5. I clip coupons and organize them for our next grocery.

6. I sew curtains and makeover our house.

7. I changed the covers of our foot stools. Next to be due is the loveseat.

8. I attend church activities.

9. I read book & magazines.

10. I play games.

11. I find work even before I applied for SS. My SS is here now and I still have no work.

12. Chat with my family and friend from home.

13. Replt to group mails.

14. Update Facebook and Twitter and Friendster, etc.

15. Organize our pics in all our PCs

16. Dance for my hubby.

17. Online shopping - clearance sale only!

and a lot more. I hope out of this you'd get to find something you'd want to do , too. Good luck!

I know exactly how you feel.

I've been in the US for about 3 weeks. My fiance works only half days and I'm already so bored. Why?

In the US, we live in the suburbs. My fiance believes it's a "town" but from someone who has lived in a large town and moved to a city in the UK, I can tell you that this is no town. It's just residential and if you walk a mile or two, you come across "main street" which consists of a bank, a coffee shop, a church and some businesses. I can't drive here, and because of problems caused by CBP when I entered, I haven't even been able to get a SSN so I can't volunteer or start driving lessons. I'm basically confined to the house until my fiance gets home. He's been really good to me, he always takes me out as soon as he gets home, but seeing as we live in the suburbs, the shopping mall or seafront is the only relief I get from the house, even then.

It's difficult. I spend my time going online, doing housework, reading, playing games and watching TV. I also spend my time talking to loved ones back home but I'm even finding that difficult as they're expecting me to sound happy now that I'm in the US, and don't understand that the adjustment and culture shock is there. Coming from an independent life, it's even harder.

I find comfort knowing that when the CBP problem gets sorted, I can volunteer at the animal shelter and start driving lessons. I'm also learning American money, growing in confidence when it comes to speaking to people, and have made a friend in the city. That means if someone drops me off at the train station, I can go and visit her. She's English too, from my hometown, so understands how it feels.

Hi, I understand what you feel. Until now I am still experiencing that but I am helping myself not to be bored. I do chatting with my family in my home country, few months ago my husband bought me a sewing machine and it help me a lot to do my projects like sewing bedroom curtain. I do sometimes blogging even my grammar was not so good, nourishing my few knowledge in playing guitar even sometimes out of tune and I can`t do good strumming. But it`s okay as long as it keeps me busy throughout the day...You can do that too!

God bless ! and have a nice day!
