I am visiting my fiancee right now, and it will probably be the last time I visit her before I return for the interview. I'd like to do something productive on our K1 application while I'm down here, but don't really know what to do. I think the best thing I could do is help her get her police and court records as well as her certified record of birth and translate them into English while I'm down here, but I don't know if the embassy allows you to do that in advance.

I just submitted my I-129F at the end of April, so we are still a ways off in getting her interview date. My fear is that if we get her police and court records too early, the embassy will reject them on the theory that she could have been arrested or tried in the months between the date on the records and the date that the interview takes place. Are these fears well-founded, or can I go ahead and just get the records now.

Also, is there anything else in particular that I should be doing now that I have the chance to actually be with her?

Thank you.

I had most of the interview documents done BEFORE filing the petition. Except I-134 and we also had the police certificate before filing the petition, so there is no time limit...do it now (police certificates are valid in the consulate for one year, it does not matter if there is an expiration on the certificate itself) Save the I-134 and any other evidence of relationship until later, but all the other documents, translations, etc...get it now. Helps pass the time and you get an interview sooner

I will forward to you what the woman in the Peruvian USA embassy in Lima said to me when we went for my wifes interview.

I dont know why you have all this stuff translated ( police reports) you dont have to it just makes a bunch of paper work for us to go through.

It does say some where in the instruction rules that you dont have to have the police reports translated as long as they are in english or in the language of the country. It does seeem how ever that most have them translated into english

That's be great if you could give me what amembassy Lima told you when you were at your wife's interview. How do you plan on forwarding it to me? If you want to send it to me via private message, that'd be fine.

Another question I have is about the Lima version of packet 3 that is on visajourney.com. It's a little confusing because the letters at the top read "INSTRUCCIONES PARA LOS SOLICITANTES DE VISA DE INMIGRANTE." But the K-1 isn't an immigrant visa, it's a non-immigrant visa. Am I looking at the wrong packet, or is it that Lima sends K-1 applicants an immigrant visa packet given the unique nature of the K-1 (a non-immigrant visa that, for all intents and purposes, is issued almost exclusively to people who plan on immigrating)?

Thanks a lot for this info. I really appreciate it. Time to hit the streets of Lima.

the priority here would be to get police certs from any country other than her own that she has been for more than six months since the age of 16. do not be concerned that it will expire as the consulates consider it valid beyond the expiration for at least a year. If she requires a police cert from her own country then get that within about three months of her anticipated interview

I know it is a little confusing but that's how they classify it for one reason or another. When Luis & I called the embassy we had to speak to that particular section 'visas de inmigrante.' That's what it said in our packet too. Don't worry.

As for the police records, you can do it now. As soon as I heard that the petition was on it's way to Lima I had Luis start doing all that stuff. Get a medical exam appointment as soon as you can. We used Dr. Nora Lari and Luis said she was very nice. No crazy over-charges either like other stories I've heard.

Buena suerte

There's a Starbucks not too far from the embassy... just letting you know! I know friends don't let friends drink Starbucks, but when there's no Dunkin Donuts.... what else can you do!
