This is my point, I don't understand the Christian basis for antisemitism. From a Christian biblical point of view everything that happened was preordained by God. The Jews did what God wanted, the Romans did what God wanted and even Judas did what God wanted. To single out the Jews for hatred is really dumb.

Antisemitism is real, it's not imagined.

It never had any legitimate justification, just as no form of bigotry or prejudice or intolerance ever has any basis. Gay bashing is wrong, prejudice against Blacks or Asians or Hispanics or Catholics or women or the handicapped or any group is wrong. And yet those prejudices have existed throughout the ages. Why? Because something in humans makes us form our tribal cliques, and to want to find rationalizations for why "we" are better than "them". Understanding that "we" and "them" is arbitrary, that we are all humans does not seem to get across to way too many. Some of them right here on VJ.

Danno - regardless of whether YOU think there is a conspiracy, unfortunately a great many people DO believe - WRONGLY - that there is some massive collusion and conspiracy to "Control" government, business, high finance and the media. People also believe in aliens and Area 51 and Elvis-reincarnation and all kinds of other conspiracies. So long as their beliefs are harmless, no one cares too much. But when ignorant stereotyping and conspiracy theories lead to actual hate crimes - and they do - that's another matter altogether. Torching synagogues, desecrating cemeteries, assaulting Jews on their way home from Friday night prayers - these things have all happened in modern America, not in some "ancient time". And they happen because the vicious hatred and prejudice is not only words, it can and does spill over into action. We just had a tragic murder at the Holocaust museum, does this really need to be spelled out any further?

Would you say that intolerance, on the whole... is something that is actually on the decrease due to intolerant idiots dying faster than they can be replaced by more idiots?

I kind of view it that way, but sometimes, as in the cases that just out into the limelight, I second guess my optimism.

IMO-Because there always has been and always will be a % of the population who are backward bigots that cannot see past their own prejudice and will believe anything [no matter how illresearched, ill informed or just plan incorrect] if it seems to justify their bigotry.

Hopefully the Darwinian principle will prevail and the % of those people will decline....but I'm not hopeful.
