it was free for me in the usa, just had to show proof, ie marriage license.

Hey Kaushalia,

I had a question. i havent changed my name to my married name yet. I got married in a foreign country and I am a US citizen. I have already filed the 130 using my maiden name and now waiting on the petition to be approved. Anyway is showing a marriage certificate enough to change my name at the social security office as well as the passport? I was wondering how you did it, because it seems like you got married in India.

I am really nervous I am gonna have problems with this, but I mean I didn't get married in the United States, and I didn't change my marital status, I was just waiting for husband to be here.

I took my marriage license to the local SS office.

The passport form for changing your name is online. Depending on how old your passport is, it may cost you some money. I did everything through the mail and had my new passport (and the old one) back within about a month. I think it was $75 fee. Just make sure you copy your old passport before you send - just in case you need to prove your past travel.

I got my passport in August 2008. Where is the form online? Can you send me the link. Thanks a lot!

If your passport was issued less than a year old, you can change your name and get a new passport for free. I got my passport last August, and I got married this May in Hong Kong, changed name with no charge when I came back in June. I just mailed in the form and my old passport.

here's the link for more info: http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/Chang...geName_851.html

No problem changing name on SSN or driver license neither

Finally see the Igor list...I'm 104 on it...hopefully it won't be too long until NOA2...I'm visiting my husband in Hong Kong again in November.

Good luck and best wishes every one!

Well what if my marriage certificate has my maiden name on it? I mean when I got married my last name was still my maiden's. I don't know if this will cause a problem or not. Does the marriage certificate need to have the new name or the maiden name on it.

Thanks!

Your marriage certificate, as far as I know, should ALWAYS be in your maiden name.

As above, your marriage certificate should have your maiden name on it. Mine from Hong Kong only has my maiden name on it also. I just sent a copy in together with my old passport, and the form to get a new passport with my married last name. Social Security office actually asked how I would want my new name to be. I use my husband's last name as my new last name, and my maiden name as my new middle name as I don't have one before. I think that sometimes in America, they would ask you if you want to take your husband's last name when issuing your marriage certificate, and would note that on your certificate, but as it is not a custom to do so in Hong Kong, mine only has my maiden name and I have no problem changing my name in America afterward.

I just noticed that there are WAY less May petitions than there were for March and April. I realize that VJ is a small percentage of the petitions actually received, but.... I'm betting they chew through the May petitions quickly.

I spoke with another filer, who got the dreaded RFE because her birth certificate didn't contain the detail of parents & such. It's not a huge deal, but it did delay her, because now she has to write for another original.

I know I received several copies of my birth certificate and one does have my parents' details and one does not. The attorney who filed our petition made a point of choosing the one with the parents' names on it, so I guess maybe he knew that it could make a difference.

Just one more thing to worry about, eh?

Julie

Are you talking about the U.S. citizen's birth certificate or the beneficiary's? That's really annoying that they need the parents' name on it. They can be really confusing sometimes.

For vaccinations check your local US embassy site. Your husband needs Original docs, once your case will forward to NVC. You will be able to get back your original AT INTERVIEW TIME...
