We've narrowed it down, but I'm reading mixed reviews about them. Which hotel is nicer to stay at? I've walked through both, but that doesn't tell me much about what it's like to stay there.

The MGM Grand is very nice....I haven't stayed at the Monte Carlo but I believe it's a little bit older and they have a small pool, if that matters but I think it's generally pretty decent. Obviously the location is about the same.

If you are reading reviews on Tripadvisor, I find them a little unreliable for Vegas - it seems like a lot of people expect to pay really cheap rates to get 5 star amenities and and get comped while betting at the $5 tables

I've stayed at Monte Carlo, as well as at Luxor and Excalibur. I've only been in the lobby/casino areas of MGM Grand so I can't speak about the rooms or pool. I think we did eat at the Rainforest Cafe at MGM Grand once.

Anyway, when I stayed at the Monte Carlo it was before the fire last year. I don't know what the status of the hotel is now, post-fire. The fire took out the top few floors of the hotel as I recall.

When I was there .. 2002, I think? ... it was quite nice, had a delightful time.

Both are in the walkable heart of the Strip area. Personally I would avoid the far-north strip around Circus Circus. And the far south end, around Mandalay Bay. But that's just me. Once I'm paying to stay on the Strip, I'd like to be in the sweet spot around New York New York, etc.

I think both Monte Carlo and MGM are in that sweet spot :)

I love the Mandalay Bay (especially the pool) but it's a bit of schlep to other casinos

The Mandalay Bay looks nice, but it's out of our price range.

I've stayed at the Excalibur, but it seems pretty kid-oriented. We're looking for something more suitable for our weddingmoon!

Yes, I agree. Excalibur is an ersatz experience, I would not recommend it.

What about Luxor or NY NY?

Luxor is really cool, especially if you get one of the angled rooms in the pyramid, with the angled elevators.

yeah, I haven't stayed at the Excalibur but it seems that way to me.....I know the MGM Grand is doing a lot of special packages these days for super cheap that might include an upgrade and some nice extras. I'd definitely search around for something like that

Last year we stayed at Harrah's. Loved the strip location, our room was very nice. Pool area wasnt so great, but all in all we enjoyed our stay. Would definitely stay there again.

Oh and for Excalibur, my friend had an awful experience there. Went to go into their room, open the door, and there were people sleeping in the bed  They get changed to another room, and had someone come in their room as well!

My favorite is The Hotel at Mandalay Bay, that's usually where I stay. I have stayed at the Venetian and Bellagio and liked them both.

I'm with Amby on this. We have stayed at a few there but, we got the most for our money at The Hotel.

Since we're po' (as I wrote befo')... I booked the Monte Carlo. It was a toss-up, but the Monte Carlo room came with 2 free tickets to a Cirque du Soleil. Hard to pass that up!

Ditto on the Luxor -- we stayed there earlier this year and while it is not as opulent as the Venetian, it did the trick just fine. We're going back again this coming Monday for a couple of nights (technically a business trip -- helloooo, tax write-off) and we're paying $49.50 a night, which is pretty sweet.

I've stayed at both. Been back to Monte Carlo a few times, but never to the MGM. Rooms were nicer at the Monte Carlo, plus they have a tram/skytrain connection to the Bellagio.
