Hello all. I'm new here and thankful I could find this place, as I am desperate for informtion.

My lovely girlfriend, who I will call Anh, and I met online in May of 2005 and we quickly hit it off. She went to Europe to visit friends in September, so I went to meet her in October and we spent a week together in Paris and then a week in Munich. She is a very traditional girl, so she stayed with family or friends and NOT in my hotel.

Anyway, in December I went back to Germany to spend Christmas with her (about 10 days) and came back home January 1. She went back to Saigon the same day. We have been talking about marriage since.

Now, I did not save my plane tickets. I didn't even think of it. But I think Anh did. Neither did I save my hotel receipts. Just didn't think of it at the time. So is that going to be a problem in proving I went to Europe twice to meet her?

We took plenty of pictures. I have an album for each trip and there are clearly identifiable landmarks (Eiffel Tower, etc) to be seen. I bought Anh's plane ticket back home to Vietnam and I know she has kept that.

My plans are to go to Saigon in May and propose to her and ask her family permission to marry.

Here is the potential problem: I have had no income for over a year now. It's complicated, but basically I began taking care of my grandmother, who helped raise me, around the summer of 2004. She had dimensia (now full blown Alzheimer's) and could not take care of herself. I was going through a divorce and at the same time wanted to concentrate on my writing, so it was mutually beneficial. I owned my car outright and had no need of "things" so I took the job, if you can call it that. But I don't get paid for it. Her estate pays for groceries, gas money, etc and I have a substantial savings from my prior job, which is how I was able to pay for my trips to Europe. Meanwhile, my writing has paid off, as I have a film in pre-production, but no income will be had from that project until it starts shooting and that is at least 9 months away.

So NO INCOME means I need a sponsor. But I am confused about that. What form do I need to file? I want to submit my I-129 form this month, as I am aware it could take a year or more to go through. Is their a FAQ somewhere that can help me know what is the proper course of action? I keep reading conflicting instructions on what I need to do.

Thanks for your help. I hope to chronical my journey here in this forum. Wish us luck. :)

First check out the K-1 guide at the top of this page.

There are several ways of proving that you have meet within the last two years. The guide outlines them pretty well and you can use a combination of them.

You will need a cosponsor. But you will not need to find one until your fiancee receives her interview. For now just read the guide and gather all the documents needed for the I-129F. Worry about the affidavit of support later.

Join us in the K-1 forum, since that forum has more traffic and you will get your questions answered quicker.
