Both my sisters are RN's, and gave birth in Fall of 2008. 1 did use a doula. Some hospitals do allow a Doula. My Maternity portion of my nursing career consists of only half a semester, thank go,lol but in that short time, saw a few child births go from natural to an emergency C section, and yes there are Dr's that prefer doing a C-section, so they make any excuse to do one! One may say a hospital is for the "sick" and for the most part that is true, BUT maternity is big $$$$, most of the rooms I have seen around here in the DC area are top notch! 1 would think they are staying in a hotel. Everyone has their own choices, as long as they make an educated 1 thats great.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

There has been talk about dropping Saturday mail service! From my understanding, the only thing holding that back is the workers union!

Hi Everyone,

Lol..I guess the childbirth talk continues here...

Ravenesque-Hmmm...tough call that you want to do the water birth and your husband wants to do a traditional hospital birth. Perhaps you can find a compromise there? For example, there are birthing centers (though I'm not sure if they are covered by all insurances), that do water births, while at the same time there are midwives, nurses, and other staff to help too. Perhaps you can consider that too?

As well, I recommend you write a 'birth plan' as to how you want your birth experience to be like...waterbirths and all...lol....

Also, visit different birthing centers, hospitals, etc. for more information and prespectives too....

For example, I "shopped around" several hospitals, and finally decided on the one that I wanted to give birth in....lol..2 hours away..but well worth it!

I'm leaning toward home water birth but hubby wants me to do childbirth with epidurial. He's more comfortable with me at the hospital.

Flames9_RN-Lol...I understand how women would want to do childbirths at home, as that seems the most 'natural' thing to do, than being a 'cold and sterile' hospital environment. Yet, I understand your concern too, about not having adequate medical care in time, when giving birth at home, instead of at a hospital. Which is why, I like you, think that the hospital is the best, and chose that route instead. And luckily I did, as I did end up in an emergency situation, and if it wasn't for the quick medical care I received, I would have lost the baby (which we almost did), and/or something would have happened to me too.

I'm surprised people do child births at home! yes I know many people do, and most of child births go off without a problem, BUT if something does go wrong, time is a very important factor, and i sure would want to be at a hospital, not a waddling pool, lol But thats just me,lol

SpiritAlight-I agree, childbirth should be as "natural" as can medically be. And I hope that if you ever do experience childbirth, may it be as "natual". loving, and positive experience as it can be for you and your family!

Oh Flames RN (cool name now!!!), I hear you on your concerns, and although I do not have children, I would have done that at home with a doula (or someone).

Hospitals are "sick" places, not conducive to the natural and loving experience that it truly is.

Hey, that's my opinion.

:star:

Yippee!

Flames9_RN-That's great that your sisters had a good birthing experience at the hospitals and congrats on their babies too. Yes, I find that hospitals are quite accomodating and have many options when it comes to the birthing experience. And every woman goes through the birthing experience differently too. I agree though, that regardless, women have to make their own choices and be informed as to how they want their birthing experience to be. There is no right or wrong way to do this. But the important thing is to make sure that both the baby and the mother's health are not at stake when going through such. Lol..I agree, hospitals aren't necessarily for the 'sick', as maternity wards are far from that. I admit, when I was at the hospital when going through childbirth, the room that I stayed in felt like a hotel room, complete with private room, room service, a 3-course special dinner for 2, a great view overlooking the mountains, rooming-in, television, baby gift bags and supplies, etc. And it was all for only a small co-pay too (thank goodness I had health insurance!). Heck, I even said to my husband, "Aww...Do we have to leave?", after I had stayed several days there. On the bright side, we left with the baby, so that was the best part of the stay there! The only complaint (which was what my husband's complaint): They had to check up on me every so often throughout the night..which woke my husband up..and I had to say..."Yeah I'm still alive!"....lol...

As for c-sections...personally, I wouldn't have wanted one...and I did indicate in writing to my doctor and other medical staff of my preferances...However, in my situation, I had no other choice...as the baby was in distress and wasn't going to make it out otherwise....

But yeah, I know what you mean about doctors wanting more money for unnecessary procedures, regardless,..so the patient has to definitely be informed and more knowledgable there as to what they want in their healthcare needs...

Both my sisters are RN's, and gave birth in Fall of 2008. 1 did use a doula. Some hospitals do allow a Doula. Hi Everyone,

Kathryn41-Thanks for the explaination....VBG=Very Big Grin... :D

Funny, how the internet and technology changes so often..It only seemed like yesterday that the internet was just a new thing....Time flies!

Ant asked: By the way, Kathryn, what does "VBG" mean? (I notice that you type that in your posts...but I don't know what that means..Is that a good thing?)...

hehehe VBG is from before Emoticons - it means 'Very Big Grin". It's a good thing - not laughing out loud but bigger than a mere smile.

Rhiann-Congrats about getting your SSN! Make sure you keep it in a safe place and don't lose it! You will need it for pretty much 'everything' around here in the USA (unlike a Candian SIN), so guard it with your life, and protect it against identity theft too! Hope you get your other US identification too!

I got my SSN today. My first piece of American identification, well if you don't count the visa.

CDAgirlMI-Oh yeah, I love saturday mail service here in America too! Now, if only they can put my mailbox in front of my house! (my mailbox is literally a mile away), and not make me pick up packages at a post office 20 miles away...lol...(that's another story)....

 for Saturday mail service!

Rhiann-Oh yeah, I love saturday mail service here in America too! Now, if only Canada Post can learn a thing or two from here..lol...

I love Saturday mail.

I wish they had it in Canada.

Flames9_RN-What, no way! No no no! Keep Saturday service! That's the least they can do around here!

There has been talk about dropping Saturday mail service! From my understanding, the only thing holding that back is the workers union!

Everyone-On that note...Today is Saturday...And in my Saturday mail...1) A sample can of tomato sauce (lol.....I'm surprised that it even fit in my box and that I didn't have to go to the post office to pick it up...unlike an oversized christmas package I got before..lol..) 2) The property tax bill and more bills (groans....I'm not too happy about those pieces of mail....lol...) What's in your mailbox on a Saturday?...lol...

waking people up,lol! I work on a cardiac floor and every 4 hrs the techs wake up the pts to take thier vitals. Then of course I'm in their assessing them, passing out meds, them going down for procedures etc etc! On rarely gets much sleep in a hospital. Of course it depend son what type of floor on! Now a days, we truly try to get people out of the hospital as fast as we can

 I always forget about Saturday mail service!! Actually, I tend to forget to check the mail, because I had a slot in my front door back home. Our mailbox is right across the street from us, but I still forget. Also when we go away it's strange to me when Tim "stops" mail service for a while. I just had my son pick mine up off the floor and put it on my desk for when I got home..

I LOVE Saturday mail service and really hope that they keep it.

Let's see, what did we get in the mail yesterday? A store catalogue, Joe's paycheque statement; acknowledgment of a stop payment from the bank (someone lost the cheque we gave them), a statement about a health care claim still waiting for information requested from my doctor (grr - an ongoing stalemate - I hate the US health insurance system!); a letter from my Dad (he regularly sends me an envelope stuffed with interesting newspaper clippings, photographs or other paraphernalia from back home), and two late Christmas cards.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Moving this conversation from the Dinner thread. LOL

My husband went to the drugstore yesterday and the pharmacist gave him some recommendations. He brought home Mucinex-DM and CVS Cough & Sore Throat Nighttime liquid. (I sent him for cough syrup and/or some lozenges. lol) Apparently the DayQuil I was taking is bad for my blood pressure so she told him to tell me to stop. Anyway, that CVS liquid is nice and cool on the throat, and has helped a lot with the soreness. It sure packs a wallop, though. One dose and you're knocked out as if someone had given you general anaesthesia! :o:lol::dead:

I'm still sick, though. :(

On a happy note..... the new Publix has started stocking banana popsicles!!!!!!! My husband is going to check and see if they have chocolate ones now too. Oh, please please please please let them have chocolate popsicles. pray.gif
