You have a job?? Thats cool! What do you do?

(im lazy to read back in the 200 pages of the forum)

Yeah!! I just got a job last month, which was good since I've been here a year now  I work at a company that manufactures equipment for data centers, I started out doing admin work part time but I'm starting full time in a few weeks, moving to customer service. It's pretty close to home which I love, 20 mins each way! Everyone is pretty nice too, despite some ignorant comments/questions about Canada which I've become used to now

Yes, that's the biggest word in my vocabulary, and yes, I knew it before today. :P

The in laws are gone for the weekend, meaning we have the house to ourselves. I say its time for a sexy party.

I just felt like being random, sorry you had to read all that ####### :P

First make sure the in-laws aren't hiding somewhere watching pornos.

Entropy is the natural order of the universe so that would make you what, a natural woman? :bonk:

I have to agree with you about traffic!! It takes a long time to get in and out of NYC most weekends. The traffic is UNREAL! What should take 30 minutes to drive to usually takes double or triple that! I guess once you get out of the city it's fine... but still the traffic is horrendous.

If you ever see a traffic report every morning on a local NY news channel, it's actually Jersey that has the most traffic. No one from New York is moving outside the city, but every one in Jersey is moving from West to East whether they are driving to the city or not. The Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, as well as the GWB, is packed going into NY, not out.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

In preperatin for my move I have finally put my house up for sale. The first person who viewed made an offer, but it was pretty low, so I decided to wait it out. It had only been up on a website for about 2hrs and I already have 6 showings for it. I hope a get a buyer quickly so I can pack and and get ready to move!!! My job is done at the end of the month, so it would be nice to go and spend christmas together without having to stress about the house!!

I'm not looking overly forward to the job search process once I finally get down to D.C. Obviously I'll get a job a.s.a.p., but given all of the other big changes I'll be going through (i.e.: learning the area, being with my wife full time, adjusting to life in the U.S.) getting back into the rat race is definitely more out of necessity than true desire. Which isn't to say I'm not a good, motivated worker, for I am, but ultimately getting into the job market down there isn't a prospect I relish. I'll be happier once I actually GET the job.

Not sure where in BC ur coming from Wyatt, but traffic in DC is a killer!!! Drives me nutz!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I'll be in the same boat with you all. We're right in between DC and Baltimore so... and yes ,the traffic coming into and out of DC circle is friggin NUTS!!

I remember one time we sat in traffic for like 3 hours trying to get home. Way worse than Toronto. But, they have a really great metro and transit system in general so...

Looking for a job... can't even think of that yet save to say, it scares me a lot.

Well, I AM from the Vancouver area, but I've already learned first-hand how nuts traffic can be in Washington D.C.

It's funny -- I often used to talk to my wife when she was on her way into work (driving from Alexandria to the Watergate Building), and our conversations would be punctuated with outbursts like, "Nice $*%&$ signal, @$$#o(!" I used to think that she was just overly sensitive to traffic...until I saw what she meant.

I spent some time driving around when I was there last week, including driving her to and from work a few days. One of the days I missed the Memorial bridge (took one exit too early) and had to loop all the way around and get on the Key bridge. Another of the days I decided to come down towards the Kennedy Center and on to Virginia Ave., but accidentally got on to an expressway... I managed to get off before the expressway actually started, but had to loop around and CRAWL down Pennsylvania Ave. for fifteen minutes at the tail end of rush hour.

Ah well. I've always been the sort of guy who factors in a LOT of extra contingency time for traffic. I used to give myself 45 minutes to get to work, even though it never took me more than twenty-five to get there.

Regardless, I still can't wait to relocate! Traffic is annoying, yes, but is only a very minor annoyance for me compared to most people I think. Especially my wife. :P

we reside in Falls church VA, but moving out towards Baltimore this Spring--about half way between dc/Baltimore. Wife is sick of her commute, so were buying a house out that way. My commute will totally blow then, lol But the areas are soo much nicer, much more relaxed!!

We have a Garmin GPS and we love it,especially when looking for houses in certain neighborhoods! the traffic avoidance feature is pretty much useless though.

I actually got a conditional offer this afternoon for MORE than my asking price. I am a horrible negotiator and I was not into calling people and haggling back and forth to see if I could get more. The guy offered above asking price right off the bat, so I have respect for that. And since I didn't use an agent...I won't have to take 5 or 6% out of that!! I am in Ottawa, and the market is really quite strong here right now. I have my medical on Monday, and already have all my necessary papers for the interview, so now it is just interview to wait for. I feel like Charlie praying to find the Golden Coupon for a trip to the chocolate factory...lol!

Nice to hear, Colleens!

On a completely unrelated note... I just stumbled across the "Site Related Discussion" forum and I see that tons of folks are up in arms about the moderators here. I've only been an active poster at this site for a month, but it totally blows me away that there are legions of VJers unhappy with the mods! I haven't even noticed any bad moderation here, let alone seen it as a major problem...
