Colorado boy, 6, floats away in balloon

Officials were trying to rescue a 6-year-old boy who climbed into a balloon-like homemade aircraft and floated into the sky over eastern Colorado. The Larimer County Sheriff's Department said the helium balloon had been at the boy's family home in Fort Collins. The boy got into the craft and undid the rope anchoring it

He just got the vacation approved about 10 minutes ago.

My daughter called right when I was reading this and told me to turn on CNN. That is absolutely mind-blowing.

The balloon is down and he's not even inside it. :(

This is awful.

I hope those parents get in trouble. By the sounds of it, it wasnt even locked to the ground or anything.

Most parents are probably pretty lackadaisical in ensuring that kids don't get in to stuff that could do them harm.

How many parents have a lawn mower in the shed that isn't locked, a rain barrel in the back yard that isn't secured, a tempting fire pit in the back yard and matches in the drawer.

As for the balloon, they are saying now that they don't even know how much lift this thing would have had if in fact the child had been in there - so really maybe the danger from it is pretty small.

I just saw this on the news and his brother said he saw him climb into the basket, so I'm not sure what to think. I hope the boy is safe but this whole story sounds weird.

Weird things happen in Colorado...

Well, as per the news here, they are suggesting that the kid was never inside the balloon in the first place. Apparently the family who constructed it is known in the area as being reclusive and very strange. The bottom of the balloon was apparently reinforced my cardboard and nothing else... which wouldn't be able to hold the weight of a 6 year old child. They think the family is trying to lie in order to gain some publicity and attention. I really don't know what to believe.

They searched the home and didn't find the boy. If he was never in the balloon then where did he go? So weird.
