So tomorrow I am going to go out and play! It is a National Civil War re-enactment just down the road from me at Nash Farms, a Civil War calvary encampment site - and they are doing the Battles of Atlanta Campaign for the next three days. Tomorrow is education day so there will be lots of school kids on site learning about what happened here in 1864. I'll be joining a friend of mine with the 9th Georgia Artillery demonstrating living history activities all day. I actually have a 'work dress' cut out that needs sewing so that is what I'll be doing - I forgot to pre-shrink the fabric on the last one I made - and it shrunk so much when I washed it that I had to give it to my friend's granddaughter to wear - so I need another :) . I really, really, really miss my re-enactments from Ontario and while I am not camping over, at least this gives me a taste of a hobby I really enjoyed. And I'll tell you, I really need some play time!

Oh Kathryn, how delightful! I'm sure you're going to have a grand time. Enjoy your day! I know how much you miss this type of thing!

Thanks everyone! They day turned out pretty good. My husband brought my home roses, we had a nice Italian dinner, I got tickets to the Brad Paisley concert in a couple weeks and his mom made me a cake! :)

Happy belated Birthday Huggle! Sounds like you ended up being treated very special! As I'm sure you are...

 I was hoping for some music to go along with it! Then I thought...hey, this can't be heaven...all of these people aren't dead yet!

Good morning everyone! Going to water areobics this morning and then off to finish up some last minute grocery shopping for tomorrow's ethnic pot luck. My mouth is watering already.

Hope everyone has a lovely Labour Day weekend! Here is a bit of trivia about Labour Day. The celebration of Labour Day has its origins in the Eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

An old custom prohibits the wearing of white after Labour Day. The explanations for this tradition range from the fact that white clothes are worse protection against cold weather in the winter to the fact that the rule was intended as a status symbol for new members of the middle class in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Well, I had a great time at the event. It was hot - but what can you expect when you are wearing the 7 layers of clothing dictated by the Civil War era dress code! It was great to sit with a friend under the shade of a tree, sewing, while answering questions asked by school kids. In the encampment across from us were two Canadians! They have been in Georgia for 12 years now but they also do Rendezvous type of Re-enactments (fur trade era) - and they had been to the event in "Canada that I helped start and was on the organizing committee for many years - "Heritage Days, Faire at the Forks"! They had just started doing Civil War so my friend and I joined the woman of this partnership for a shopping expedition through the sutlers (merchants who follow the army). We advised her on undergarments, hoops, hats and dresses - and had a grand time. There weren't as many school children as they had expected - which was fine for us as we got to wander about and visit with others who were there. Interestingly enough, both my friend and I are horsewomen of many years experience - well our new Canadian friends own a hunter/jumper stable north of Atlanta ( I owned a Canadian Sport Horse for 28 years and used to show Hunter classes) and now we have an open invitation to go riding there any time. As Joe got off work early today I didn't stay for the evening battle but came home to get dinner. When I went into the bedroom to get changed all of the cats were lying curled up asleep on the other hoop petticoat I had left on the bed - it was so cute.

Charles, people could have had a field day on VJ today. I gave warning that I was not going to be here but apparently no one else was either - VJ was moderator less all day. To be very honest, coming back to find all of the messages waiting and none of them having been attended to all day brought back all of the stress I was hoping to let go. I am getting very tired of being a moderating team of one or two. But maybe this should go in the vent thread instead.

Awesome! Please let us know how it went :) As you know personally, some events are great, and others not so much...usually caused by the weather

If you're ever interested in doing another time period, like WWII, let me know! :)

Thanks - I started out in War of 1812 back in 1991, expanded to Rev War and F&I and even did several 'Culloden" events. I think Civil War is about as 'recent' as I am interested in going as I truly find myself more attracted to the earlier eras. There used to be a really good time-line event at Fort Malden in Amherstburg Ontario that I loved to attend. It stretched from the Romans up to WWII. I used to narrate the heritage fashion shows for them and it was fascinating to see the variety of uniforms stretched out over time. What was even more interesting was the weapons demonstrations - as you can imagine! Several friends of mine back in Canada re-enact WWII - one of them as a German. Considering how poorly he was often treated and how his unit were 'not welcome' at certain events, I always wondered why he persevered with that particular impression.

I have a few friends up in Canada still who do the Fort Malden event. I've never been able to attend though...I think it conflicted with another event I would do in the US with my unit.

Funny...my husband does a German impression. He does Fallschirmjager (paratrooper...or to be exact, parachute hunter )

There are some German impressions down here that are not looked upon as a 'nice' impression to be doing. Anything that is politics based, is strictly no-no.

Once at an event, someone had the nerve to dress up as Hitler! Didn't go down too well. Later that same evening, they held a 'rally' with someone yelling in German and cheers...That too didn't go down too well. Turns out, he was yelling out a recipe for chocolate chip cookies. Didn't make it any better in my opinion.

But anyway...I have fun hanging out with the boys, teaching the public and playing the resistance at tacticals.

If you ever come north for a Civil War event, let me know, maybe we can co-ordinate to have my unit show up :)

Thanks J&K, I'll definitely keep that in mind.

I slept in this morning and was sort of half awake with the cats all around me when I started to hear what sounded somewhat like thunder but not quite. The cats all jumped up off of the bed and Lion started to growl. I jumped up as well and tried to listen. Boom, Boom, Boom! I asked Joe if he heard it too (he has problems with his hearing) and he said he thought it was thunder. It didn't sound like thunder though. I went outside to hear better and suddenly it became clear to me what it was - artillery fire. The morning battle at the re-enactment was taking place 8 miles away and I was hearing the exchange between the cannons on the battlefield. The booming went on for about 20 minutes.

so today we decided to head into LA and do some free and next to free stuff.. We went to the LA Farmer's Market and the Getty center..

The Farmer's Market was kind of an upscale one and they really only had a little area where they sold some fruit and vegies... They had a lot of little places to eat too, we had a yummy steak sandwich.. the rest of it was upscale stores... oh and we walked right past Gene Simmons and his son ..lol

we went to see the La Brea Tar pits too.. I guess it was pretty cool... it smelled pretty bad though :P

the Getty center was pretty neat.. it is up in the hills and has some great views of the ocean, which we couldn't see that great because of the smoke.. you had to park your car at the bottom and take a tram to the top..

all in all we had a pretty good day..

nice day in the DC area! off to the batting cages,mini-golf and driving range today!!! All for a whopping $18--thats ttl for 2 of us! thanks groupon.com lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
