Yeah, my dad is a crazy internet stalker

Or rather, he sits at home all day and does nothing but roam the internet, but he told me the other day that he looked up my name and found that I'd been chatting on a forum all the time. I said, uh...do you mean Visa Journey? And he said, yeah that's it!

But when I type my email or my name into google I don't get any links to VJ so I have no idea if he was getting confused or if he is just that awesome at internet stalking!!!

My VJ account is accessed by my email, which is my name. My VJ username is not my name though, so he had to have found it by the email.....

Believe, or not, all the posts on VJ are Google accessible.

He could have found you on VJ by first finding the blog you post in that's in your sig and then doing a search for the name of that blog. VJ is on the first page of results for your blog name.

Hmmm, maybe an e-mail account different than from the one used all over the net might be a good idea for these purposes.

That's actually what is recommended - setting up an email account that you only use for business. Of course, it is also always interesting to see what a google of your name picks up - at least for those of us with relatively unique names.

I had a pretty public life before I moved to the States - there are 5 pages of my name with 27 individual hits and a number of duplicates.

Well - there was a post on a forum (here it is) that some city in the middle west was requiring you to list all your accounts on Facebook, google, youtube, etc...

and give them the username/passwords so they can access them for checking what you were doing.

The manager actually stated that no one has pulled an application after filling it out/reading that....

That is going a bit to far.

NickD wasn't a very good choice,over 112,000 hits with some true dingbats using that handle, oh well.

Do prefer handles that give a vague idea to the sex of the person, don't know if I am responding to a man or a women, would respond differently to a woman than to a man.

Yeah, I already know sex discrimination is not permitted, but still feel there are some differences between the two. Could be accused of sex discrimination because I explicitly selected my mate on the basis of sex.

I really don't think something you say on a message board should be counted for or against you. I also think employers shouldn't be spending the resources and money in a bad economy to research their employees on the internet.

They didn't do it 20 years ago, and it's still unnecessary now. If someone is a good employee, they are a good employee. If they post on a fetish website, for example, that's really their personal business. (as long as they don't do it at work, of course.)
