Ah, so it's not so much the crushed rock that's the problem, but the aluminum, lead and mercury. Nice. CA has areas polluted with that stuff from the gold rush, when mining was altogether less invasive. Lovely.

Exactly. I was on a job that capped a gold mine tailings pile in Grass Valley, CA. Arsenic was the contaminate.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Ahhh the joys of collective ownership-- It's a shame that individuals can't possibly be responsible enough to be in ownership of socially vital property such as lakes.

Too bad individuals are soul-less, and drunk with capitalism, and will more than likely sell the lake to oil tycoons, manufacturing corporations, and child killers, for the dumping of their by-products.

It's really best for the socially-tuned government to sell such dumping rights to their Capital Hill minions.

Fukc Capitalism.

Matt, you think all public land should be sold off to private ownership?

Sell it, ####### it out, rape it silly. Its not personal - its only business.

If you aren't chainsawing a forest, dredging a lake or blowing up a mountain - you aren't doing your duty as an American Capitalist Pig!

Well, I have heard some argue that if all land were privatized, then it would be best protected, under the assumption that the land owner would have a vested interest in protecting the land from destruction. I can demonstrate all kinds of holes in that logic, but I'm hoping Matt will answer whether he endorses the privatization of all land.

Precedent tells us otherwise.

i sure hope obama can do something about this once he takes office.

He's too busy primping in the mirror, and planning date nights and family vacations to do anything about this.

I say what? Lampooning works when one exaggerates genuine flaws in the person one is targeting. Ascribing attributes that simply do not exist is just stupid.

When everyone owns something, it is ironically owned by no one. Land owned by no one (or everyone) fails to provide individuals with incentive. When there exists no incentive, property is utilized less efficiently as there is no economical reason to do anything but exploit it. By exploit I mean a situation where the costs are distributed among everyone, and the benefit is concentrated on the individual.

Take the simple example of a bathroom. I'm sure that you'd much rather use your own facilities than the public facilities at an Exxon Mobil truck stop along Interstate 5. You maintain your facilities, because you bear the costs associated with it's usage. If you splatter butt-vomit along the porcelain walls, your family and yourself will bear the cost (or price) of your decision not to maintain it, whereas there exists no incentive (other than subjective "courtesy") to maintain the stall at the truck stop.

This example, albeit simple, illustrates the vital importance of ownership. If you can show me the holes in this logic, Steven then by all means, I'd love to know of it.

That's odd. I know this is not an economic example, but you are suggesting that people soil their environment unless they have a personal investment in it. Simply not true. Some people do soil their environment but we have no way of knowing if they 'soil' the exxon bathroom because that is their personal habit but that seems more likely than deliberately 'soiling' simply because one has no ownership stake.

Conversely, if you are by habit a dirty #######, I would bet the personal bathroom at home would be horrible. People do ###### in their own back yards.

In fact, this needs a poll.
