I know I don't need to worry about this for a long time, but I was glancing at the FAQ and it looks like lifting the conditions is a lot more complicated than it sounds (surprise, surprise - this is the INS we're talking about!) So I want to get a rough idea of what I'll have to do, and what sort of stuff we need to try to accumulate for it... but my biggest question right now is, when exactly do I send in the paperwork for it? My greencard expires on 1/11/08 and while it seems like a long way away right now I know it's not really very far away in real time! If someone who's more knowledgable than me can give me an exact date to apply, I'll put it at the bottom of my sig to remind me to be ready for it...

Karen - Melbourne, Australia/John - Florida, USA

- Proposal (20 August 2000) to marriage (19 December 2004) - 4 years, 3 months, 25 days (1,578 days)

STAGE 1 - Applying for K1 (15 September 2003) to K1 Approval (13 July 2004) - 9 months, 29 days (303 days)

STAGE 2A - Arriving in US (4 Nov 2004) to AOS Application (16 April 2005) - 5 months, 13 days (164 days)

STAGE 2B - Applying for AOS to GC Approval - 9 months, 4 days (279 days)

STAGE 3 - Lifting Conditions. Filing (19 Dec 2007) to Approval (December 11 2008)

STAGE 4 - CITIZENSHIP (filing under 5-year rule - residency start date on green card Jan 11th, 2006)

*N400 filed December 15, 2011

*Interview March 12, 2012

*Oath Ceremony March 23, 2012.

ALL DONE!!!!!!!!

Thanks Russiangirl! I know it's a long way away... but it's not nearly as long as it seems! I will now depart from this forum for the next 12 months so as not to scare myself :P

Note that there's a 90 day window. You can file any time within that window with no worries. The window opens 90 days before expiration, and closes on the date the greencard expires. So if you're having trouble with the math, note that you don't have to hit the beginning of the window precisely. 90 days is pretty close to 3 months, so you can safely file two and a half months before expiration.

Most people recommend filing pretty close to the opening date of the window, mostly for purely practical reasons. If you have an accident and end up in a hospital for a month or something like that, the risk of the window closing before you have filed is much less if you target the beginning of the window than if you try to hit the end of the window.

It's no more complicated than the AOS. Just start putting away or creating things that validate your marriage. What I did is printout the form and Highlight what documents will be needed and put it in a folder and start sticking in there anything you think will be useful when you file, i.e. car registation, loan papers in both names. That way when the time comes you aren't running around trying to find things you can use and you can then sort through what you have and pick out the best stuff to submit.

Dittos for starting to save relevant docs starting *now*. Postmarked envelopes from cards/letters are good... lots of things will come across your desk that will be handy.

Save all boarding passes/itineraries.. keep a journal of travel dates (helpful for N-400 if you go that route).

Like AOS is NOT complicated. ;)

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

12-24-2005 Received interview letter; interview scheduled 03-01-2006

01-28-2006 Received replacement SSN card in married name (5 wks since application)

03-01-2006 AOS interview -- approved; received stamp in the passport
